Unit 1 & 2 Project

Directions: Choose 1 of the following projects to complete. You may choose an extra one
for extra credit. No groups or partners allowed. These are individual projects. Use the
rubric to help you keep your project organized. DUE SEPTEMBER 15 ( A Day) and
SEPTEMBER 16 (B Day).

Projects:
1. Research one of the following Native American tribes: Anasazi, Timucuans,
Calusa, Iroquois, and Moundbuilders. Create a small picture book about the tribe.
Make sure to include the area where they are located, political and social
structure, language, and major contributions. This is a book that would be used to
educate elementary students. Lots of pictures, visuals, and color should be
included.
2. Choose one of the West African kingdoms from Chapter 1 section 3 and create a
travel poster. Your travel poster should include religious sites, major cities, rulers,
trade, economic activities, and other important information.
3. On a poster, create a map of the world. Trace the routes of Ponce De Leon,
Magellan, Ribault, and Hudson. Rank the explorers in order of importance. In a
one page paper, defend your ranking. Use FRIESS when writing this paper.
Include supporting detail.
4. Create a picture dictionary that shows and explains the function of various
inventions and innovations of the Renaissance. Emphasize the impact of these
devices on exploration. Choose one invention as being the most important. Write
a one page paper defending your choice.
5. Create a large map of the Columbian Exchange. Show all products that went back
and forth from the New and Old World. Maps should be poster size. Extra points
if your map is 3D. Try and make your map stand out.

Project Rubric
1. Content: 40 points
a. All information is covered in the project. All information is accurate and
pertains to the time period that we are studying. Content is summarized
and in students own words.
2. Visual Appeal: 25 pts
a. Pleasing use of color, shapes, symbols, and other graphic elements.
Captures the viewer’s attention and interest.
3. Organization: 25 pts
a. Logical and easy to read. Type and visuals neatly executed. The layout
complements the content.
4. On-Time: 10 pts
a. Project is turned in on time. 5 points will be deducted for every calendar
day it is late.
