Re: Make Oakland Better Now! Questionnaire

Dear [Candidate]:

As you know, Make Oakland Better Now! is a grass-roots advocacy group dedicated to
improving the City of Oakland in the areas of public safety, public works and transparency
and accountability in city government. We formed more than a year ago, in part for the
purpose of focusing the 2010 mayoral elections on the issues that most matter to
Oaklanders. We now have well over 500 people who subscribe to our e-mail lists or have
joined our Face Book group. Our membership has a strong interest in, and great concern
about, the future of the City of Oakland. Our by-laws allow us to make candidate
endorsements, but we have not yet decided whether we will do so in this election.

Enclosed, please find a copy of our Mayoral Candidate Questionnaire. This

Questionnaire is the product of much thought by our board and many of our members.
Members submitted more than thirty-five proposed questions, and we have shaped these
into the nineteen questions you will find here. Not surprisingly, the questionnaire focuses on
our three areas of interest, as well as the city budget and leadership issues. The
questionnaire requests narrative answers, and there is no limit to answer length.

We are asking all candidates to return the Questionnaire to us at

Oaklanders@MakeOaklandBetterNow.org with their answers no later than Friday,
September 17. We plan to begin publishing candidate responses immediately thereafter
through our e-mail lists and Face Book page, on our web site, on our blog, Oaktalk, on the
on-line local news hub Oakland Local and on other on-line and print media. Please let us
know right away if the September 17 deadline presents a problem, or if you prefer not to
participate in the Questionnaire process.

In addition, we intend to begin regularly updating our web site with information about
candidate appearances and events. Please begin sending us this information to
Oaklanders@MakeOaklandBetterNow.org, and we will plan to continuously update the
information on our web site between now and the election.

Very truly yours,

Board Chair
Make Oakland Better Now!
