Die Casting Process

?n the hot chamber process, the plunger
and cylinder are submerged in the molten
metal in the holding furnace. The power to
come since in to the die cavity is provided
by a hydraulic accumulator. The oil is
supplied to the accumulator by a hydraulic
pump at a rate that will bring the
accumulated pressures upto the desired
operating level each time a casting (shot)
is to be made.
V The casting sequence in the hot
chamber die - casting process is
illustrated in the figure. When a shot is
made, the control valve opens causing
the shot cylinder to force the plunger
down and force molten metal through
the nozzle, past the sprue pin, through
the runners and gates and into the die
cavity. The gases that where in the
system and some of the molten metal
flow through the die cavity and out
through vents and /or into overflows.
V ×fter the cavity is filled, the metal is
allowed to solidify, the casting is
ejected and the cycle is repeated.
Since the goose neck and plunger are
submerged in the molten metal, the
system refills automatically when the
plunger is withdrawn.

V irst, the gooseneck is lowered into the molten
alloy. The compressed-air connection to the lid is
opened to the atmosphere by-means of a valve.
This allows the metal to flow into the gooseneck
through the spout. The gooseneck is then
mechanically lifted from the melting pot, thus
allowing the surplus metal to drain from the
spout. ?t is tilted backward slightly to prevent
drip, and continuation of the stroke brings the
spout into contact with the die orifice, where it is
locked in position.
V The valve leading to the atmosphere is
then closed, and the valve from the
compressed-air supply is opened. ×n
air pressure of about 500 psi is applied
directly on the molten aluminum to
force it into the die. The compressed air
is then shut off and the valve to the
atmosphere opened, after which the
gooseneck is again allowed to drop
back into the melt
Cold Chamber
V The cold chamber process is
used for metals that melt at
higher temperatures such as
aluminium, magnesium and
brass
