Third Long Exam

This is a TAKE-HOME Exam. Put your answers in a clean BLUE BOOK writing in front of the RIGHT
PAGES ONLY. WORK INDEPENDENTLY and JUSTIFY all answers. DO NOT consult anyoneelse regarding
this exam. The exam is due for submition at the BEGINNING of the class on 14 September 2010.

I. TRUE OR FALSE. Explain briefly and clearly the truth or falsity of the following statements. Each item is
worth 2 points.
1. The functions y = x2 + 1 and y = −(x2 + 1) rotated about the y-axis will form a hyperboloid of 2 sheets.

2. The equation x2 + y 2 + 2y + z 2 = 1 is an equation of an elliptic cone.

~ ·V
3. If U ~ ×W
~ = 0 then U
~ is perpendicular to both V
~ and W
~.

4. The lines `1 : x = 2t − 1, y = 5 − 3t, z = t + 9 and `2 : x = 4 − 4t, y = 7 − 6t, z = −2t are parallel.

5. Three planes can have a point as their common intersection.

II. PROBLEM SOLVING. Show complete and clear solution to get full points. Box your final answers. Each
item is worth a total of 5 points.
~ B
1. Prove Jacobi’s Identity for vectors A, ~ and C
~ which states that

~ × (B
A ~ × C)
~ +B
~ × (C
~ × A)
~ +C
~ × (A
~ × B)
~ = ~0

2. Find the parametric equations of the line that intersects the line ` : x = 2t, y = 1 − t, z = 2 + t at a right
angle and contains Q(0, 2, 1).
3. Locate the point of intersecion of σ : 2x + y − z = 0 and a line through S(3, 1, 0) that is perpendicular to
the plane σ.
4. a. Show that the distance of the point P (x0 , y0 , z0 ) from the plane π : ax + by + cz + d = 0 is

|ax0 + by0 + cz0 + d|

a2 + b2 + c2
.
b. Use the formula above to show that the distance between the parallel planes π1 : ax + by + cz + d1 = 0
and π2 : ax + by + cz + d2 = 0 is
|d − d2 |
√ 1
a2 + b2 + c2
.
5. Let L(5, −2, 1), O(0, 2, 0), V (1, 1, 1) and E(3, 0, 5) be points in R3 . Find the (a.) the volume of the triangular
pyramid whose vertices are the given points and (b.) the equation of the sphere whose center is E and
contains O.
6. Two bugs, TUTANG Bug and MUNINGNA Bug, are walking along two lines in 3D Space. At time t,
TUTANG Bug is at point (x, y, z) on the line `1 : 4 − x = 21 (y − 1) = z − 2 and at the same time t,
MUNINGNA Bug is at point (x, y, z) on the line `2 : x = y − 1 = 21 (z − 1). (a.) Find their distance at time
t = 0.(b.) How close do they get?
