EME – 401 Machine Design 3L

Introduction: Systematic Design Procedure, Basic Principles of Design, influence of production

processes on design, design of steady, fluctuating & dynamic stresses, stress
concentration.

Design of Elements: Cotter joint, Screwed fastings, Prestressing of bolts and effect of fatigue on
bolts, bolted, riveted & welded connections under direct ans eccentric loading,
design of shafts under axial, bending & torsion loads, pipes & joints under low &
high pressures, translation screws, close coiled helical springs.

Metal fits & Tolerances: Unilateral, bilateral tolerances, clearances, interference & transition fits, hole &
shaft basis economics of wide & close tolerances.

Gears: Design of spur and Helical gears.
