Deadline: 24:00pm, Jan 16, 2002

A bandpass filter requires the following characteristics (This is a real filter used in an L-band
radar except that the ripple is 0.2 dB):
1. 0.5 dB equal ripple.
2. Center Frequency: 1.25 GHz.
3. 3 dB passband: 50 MHZ.
4. Attenuation at 1.5 GHz: more than 30 dB.

Problem 1. Design this bandpass filter using coupled lines. Plot the circuit.
Problem 2. Design this bandpass filter using quarter-wave resonators. Plot the circuit.
Problem 3. Compare the size of the filters. Assume ideal transmission lines.

Solution:

At 1.5 GHz, the equivalent low-pass prototype frequency is 9.1667. By looking up Figure
8.27(a), is sufficient. However, in order to avoid an extra section of impedance
transformer, is chosen such that both input and output ports have the same characteristic
impedance. From Table 8.4a, we have
.
1. Coupled line filter
From Eq. (8.121),

From Eq. (8.108), the even and odd mode impedances of each sections are

Circuit Layout: omitted.

2. Quarter-wave resonator
From Eq. (8.131), the characteristic impedance of each quarter-wave shorted transmission
2

lines are

Circuit Layout: omitted.

3. Comparison of the sizes

The coupled-line filter will require a total length of one wavelength. The quarter-wave
resonator will require an area of 0.50 wavelength by 0.25 wavelength. However, the quarter-
wave resonator has unrealizable characteristic impedances because they are very different
from .
