Water Droplet

Simulation on Glass
Surfaces

CS 565 Term Project

Dogan Kaya Berktas

What is the project is
about?

•  Realistic animation of water droplets on glass surfaces

•  Flow of droplets

•  Rendering

Facts about Droplet
Flow

•  Droplet start to flow only when it exceed certain
threshold

•  Surface and other droplet change the flow route

•  Droplets left some wet path behind

Major Considerations

•  Gravity

•  Interfacial & Surface tension

•  Air resistance

•  Accurate rendering

How to Simulate

•  Divide the surface to nxn

•  Each cell has its own

property, impurity

Flow Simulation

•  Movement of the droplet and the critical mass

•  Direction of the movement

•  Speed of the movement

•  The mass left behind

•  Falling behind the critical mass & the stop

Problems to be Solved

•  Finding the critical mass of the each cell

•  Determining the flow direction according to adjacent
cells

•  tendency

•  critical mass

•  inclination

Problems to be Solved

•  Droplet speed

•  Wet or Dry surface acceleration

•  Collision & Merging

•  Shape of droplet

Rendering

•  Using background texture for pixel colors

•  Trace each ray

•  Reflected

•  Refracted

•  Defocus and blur effects for image quality
