Army troops overruns NPA Encampment in Davao

Army troops encountered on Thursday morning a group of New People’s

Army rebels at a mountainous place south of Davao City. After the firefight, the
government forces seized the NPA encampment and the documents belonging to
the rebel group.

A platoon of soldiers belonging to the 84th Infantry Battalion were conducting

clearing operations in the vicinity of Purok 8, Barangay Carmen, Baguio District,
Davao City when they chanced upon a group of more or less 30 members of the
NPA belonging to Guerilla Front 54 under Alex Rosete a.k.a. Bobby encamped at
said place.

Prior to the encounter, the 84th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army
received an information from civilians about the presence of around 30 fully armed
men passing through a civilian community on Wednesday afternoon. Though unsure
of what the NPA would do, the government troops took the necessary action to
prevent the enemy from launching hostile actions that will harm and intimidate the
people.

The NPA group of Rosete is responsible for the burning of one truck, a
backhoe and bulldozer owned by private individuals on April 14, this year in Toril
District, Davao City. This same group also violated the human rights of the five
supporters of a local candidate whom they abducted on May 5 at Barangay Manuel
Guianga, Tugbok District, this City. On June 26, this year, the same group took away
the service pistol of a security personnel of a garden resort located at a place near
the encounter site.

Government troops found bloodstains on the positions occupied by the NPA

indicating that casualties were inflicted to the rebel group. Ground troops involved in
the skirmishes also reported that the NPA members they encountered dragged their
casualties as they retreated away from the encounter site.

Lieutenant Colonel Gabriel Viray, Commander of the 84th Infantry Battalion,

directed the conduct of pursuit operations against the retreating NPA members. He
said that this NPA group should learn a lesson that their wrong acts will not go
unpunished. “We cannot allow them to terrorize our people,” he said.
