Dynamism of Indian Agriculture: Nature, Patterns & Drivers

An Exploratory Study

ABSTRACT :

Agriculture is considered as the backbone of Indian economy, and it provides livelihood to about
two thirds of the work force of India. Contributes nearly 13.2% to the GDP and accounts for
10.23% of India's exports (As per Economic Survey, 2009-2010). About 43 % of India's
geographical area is used for agricultural activity. This makes it one of the most important
sectors of the economy. The government has emphasized that the main thrust on agriculture
sector would be to achieve further diversification in farm activities.

The paper is an attempt made to identify the key drivers of the India’s agriculture sector. This
paper will be organized into different sections. Historical perspective is covered in the first

Organic Farming, Agri-Clinics and Agri-business Centers, Bio-Technology’. The consequences
and factors affecting these thrust areas are highlighted in the third section. The fourth section
