Welcome to Hyde Technology School English Department

The English Department at Hyde Technology School is an established and

successful one. We have eight full time specialist English Teachers as well as
an EAL Partnership Teacher and a Bi-lingual Assistant. In addition, most of our
teachers are Leading Literacy Teachers within Tameside authority. This means
that we are at the forefront of all new developments in English and Literacy.

We have enjoyed increased results at both Key Stage 3 and 4 over the past
few years and are dedicated to developing new strategies that will further
enhance the attainment of our students. We implemented a new teaching style
with our 2009 Literature entries and this has, in turn, led to a significant
increase in the number of students achieving the top grades.

Most of our students enjoy English and behaviour is generally of a good

standard in all English lessons. Staff work hard to foster students’ enjoyment
of the subject by developing engaging schemes of work and using a range of
activities within the lessons. These schemes are shared across the department.

The department plans lessons using the school’s ‘Dynamic Learning’ lesson
format. This is similar in format to the NLS strategy and incorporates many
ideas from Alistair Smith’s work on ‘Accelerated Learning.’ Staff are
encouraged to develop their understanding of how VAK techniques can be used
to engage students and develop their understanding of the subject.

All classes are taught in sets. We follow the AQA A syllabus for English,
English Literature and Media Studies. Media Studies is offered as an option
for Key Stage 4 as well as forming a part of our Key Stage 3 syllabus.

We have a dedicated ICT suite within our department. There are also
interactive whiteboards in all English classrooms together with a wide range of
interactive software.
