We have enjoyed increased results at both Key Stage 3 and 4 over the past
few years and are dedicated to developing new strategies that will further
enhance the attainment of our students. We implemented a new teaching style
with our 2009 Literature entries and this has, in turn, led to a significant
increase in the number of students achieving the top grades.
The department plans lessons using the school’s ‘Dynamic Learning’ lesson
format. This is similar in format to the NLS strategy and incorporates many
ideas from Alistair Smith’s work on ‘Accelerated Learning.’ Staff are
encouraged to develop their understanding of how VAK techniques can be used
to engage students and develop their understanding of the subject.
All classes are taught in sets. We follow the AQA A syllabus for English,
English Literature and Media Studies. Media Studies is offered as an option
for Key Stage 4 as well as forming a part of our Key Stage 3 syllabus.
We have a dedicated ICT suite within our department. There are also
interactive whiteboards in all English classrooms together with a wide range of
interactive software.
