Terbutaline is a beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist given by inhalation or injection to treat reversible airway obstruction in conditions like asthma. It works by stimulating beta-2 receptors in the lungs to cause bronchodilation and relaxation of peripheral blood vessels. Common side effects include palpitations, tachycardia, chest discomfort, and tremors. It should not be given to those with hypersensitivity to sympathomimetic drugs, thyrotoxicosis, or pregnancy in the first trimester. Overdose may be treated with a beta-blocker. The inhaler form should be administered slowly and with breaths held before exhaling.
