El tradicional “Chichimeco”, la Gigantona y las reinas, son los personajes que dan colorido
a las fiestas capitalinas

Los catalanes Félix Olivella -padre, hijo y nieto, dueños de un céntrico almacén, "El
Chichimeco"- brindaban alegría a los capitalinos, al financiar anualmente a las personas
que encarnaban a ese esperpento europeo que, junto con los enmascarados conocidos como
los "viejos de agosto", anunciaban la apertura de la semana de fiestas mediante el
tradicional Correo.

Durante el siglo XIX, este anunciador de las festividades fue

representado por alegorías de Mercurio, el alado mensajero de los
dioses griegos.

Los barrios capitalinos se esforzaban por hacer mejores carrozas y

exhibir sus mejores galas y sus más deliciosas bellezas femeninas,
para lo cual destinaban meses enteros a recolectar fondos de
particulares y negocios, con el fin de contratar a carroceros,
peinadores y músicos profesionales, cuyos bien pagados servicios,
en competencia con los contratados por los otros barrios, extraían
aplausos y exclamaciones de admiración entre las personas
asistentes a los desfiles y al Parque Dueñas (hoy llamado Plaza
Libertad).

Este público asistente tampoco se quedaba atrás. Contrataba al

polvo, se puede tomar tibio o dejarlo en la nevera unas horas..
