Title Assessment of Third Molar Impaction in Cases of Age Estimation

Abstract 137 cases of age estimation of both sexes of known ages between 15 and 25 years
were studied for naked eye and radiological development changes in 3rd molars. The
incidence of non-eruption or impaction of 3rd molars in males and females compared
with radiological intra alveolar development changes are presented. Radiological
assessment process is more reliable for 3rd molars as it continues its pace of
development irrespective of eruption or impaction. Radiographs with mouth open of
30o oblique - right and left view examination were found adequate to assess the
development parameters of 3rd molars in situ, in additional to physical examination for
age estimation, in actual cases.
