HRC Fuses:

HRC- High Rupturing capacity

 Fuse is the simplest current interrupting device for protection from excessive currents.

 It is used for overload and short circuit protection in medium and low voltage circuits.
Types of fuses:-
1. Semi-enclosed or receivable type:

⇒ Seen in houses.

⇒ Fuse carrier can be pulled out and blown out fuse element can be replaced.
2. Totally enclosed or catridge type

⇒ Fuse element is totally enclosed in a closed container and is provided with metal
contacts on both the ends.
3. Current limiting fuse link:

⇒ Fuse link which limits current to a considerable value than the prospective peak.
4. Drop out fuse:

⇒ Fuse link in which the fuse carrier drops out after the operation of the fuse there by
providing isolation between the terminals.
5. Expulsion fuse:
⇒ Fuse in which they are occurring during the operation is extinguished by expulsion of
gases produced by the are.
6. HRC:

⇒ A catridge fuse link having breaking capacity higher than the certain specified value.
7. Striker fuse:

⇒ Combination of fuse with a mechanical device, the operation of the fuse releases the
striker with certain pressure and displacement. Striker is used for signaling /
tripping/indication.
8. switch-Fuse:
⇒ Switch-Fuse: Combined unit comprising of fuse and switch.

Terminologies:
Fuse: A current interrupting device which opens the circuit by fusing the element.
When the current in the circuit exceeds certain value.
Fuse Element: Part of the fuse element which is designed to meet when fuse operates.
Fuse Link: Part of the fuse which needs replacement when the fuse blown out.
Operation of fuse link: Process of pre-arcing and arcing resulting in ‘blowing’ of fuse links.
Cut off: Melting of fuse element before the current reaches the prospective peak.
Cut off current: The value of current at which cut off occurs.
Pre-arcing Time: Time between commencements of current loop and the cut-off.
Arcing Time: Time between cut-off and final current zero.
Total operating Time: Pre-arcing time+ Acting Time.
