How to Manage Header and Footer in Word Documents

Scenario: Let’s assume that you want to create a word document having header,
footer, and page numbers starting from page 4.
You do not want to have any header or footer on page numbers 1, 2 and 3.

Solution:

1. Start your new Word Document.

2. Add your content to the document. (i.e. Finish with your typing part first)

3. Add header and footer to the whole document.

(In case you don’t know how to do that, go to menu bar, View, Header and
Footer. You get the floating toolbar as shown in the picture below. You can
switch between the header and footer using this floating toolbar. Add the
content into the header and footer.)

4. At this stage you should have header and footer on the whole document.

5. Now we need to break the link between the header and footer on the first three
pages and the rest of the pages.

6. Now go to Page 4. Launch the header and footer floating toolbar on page 4.
Go to the menu button that says “link to previous” and press it once. Repeat
the same process for the footer on page 4 as well.
7. Now the header and footer on the first three pages are unlinked from the
header and footer on the rest of the document.

8. We can delete the header and footer on first three pages now without affecting
the rest of the pages.

9. So, go to page 1. Launch the header and footer floating toolbar. Delete the
header as well as the footer.

10. Now you should have a header and footer on page number 4 onwards.

11. Good Luck.
