Assignment 2 – This assignment assesses Outcome 2, analyses and model engineering

situations and solves engineering problems using Laplace transforms

Scenario
As an engineer you are often required to model real life problem using Laplace transforms.
These Laplace transform model can then be used to solve the problem and take a decision.

To achieve the assessment criteria for pass (P2) you must demonstrate the ability to:

 determine Laplace transforms and their inverse using tables and partial
fractions
 solve first and second order differential equations using Laplace
transforms
 model and analyses engineering systems and determine system behavior
using Laplace transforms.

This can be achieved by completing the following tasks and submitting your solutions in a
neat well-presented manner with comments/explanations where appropriate. All sketches
and diagrams should be clearly annotated.

Tasks

1. Using the standard list of Laplace transform table find the Laplace transform of the
function 3 sin (ωt +α), where ω and α are constants.
2. Determine the Laplace transforms of
a. 5e−3tsinh(2t)
b. 2e3t(4cos 2t − 5 sin 2t) using the standard list of Laplace transform table.
3. Use the Laplace transform of the first derivative to derive the transforms:

a. * +

b. * +
