ADVERBS OF MANNER

►To form a regular adverb of manner we add –LY to an adjective

careful  carefully
logical  logically
quiet  quietly
heavy  heavily
bad  badly
terrible  terribly

*Irregular adverbs are exceptions to the general rule:


good  well
fast  fast
hard  hard☺
early  early
late  late ☺

☺ hardly: adverb of degree = almost not, barely, infrequently, just, scarcely


lately: adverb of time = in recent times, just now, not long ago, recently

Examples: Your English is very good. // You speak English very well.
Jack is a very fast runner. // Jack can run very fast.
Ann is a hard worker. // Ann works hard.
The train was early – late. // I got up early – late this morning.

ADVERBS OF DEGREE OR INTENSITY

►Adverbs of degree can be used before adjectives, verbs or other adverbs to


give information about the extent or degree of something.

Examples: They’re extremely happy.


I really hate travelling by plane.
He’s almost always late.

* Weak intensity: slightly, a bit, a little, not at all, etc.


* Medium intensity: quite, fairly, pretty, rather, etc.
* Strong intensity: very, too, extremely, completely, really, totally, absolutely,
definitely, etc.
