Abstract
Terahertz (THz) radiation occupies the part of the electromagnetic spectrum between the infrared and
millimeter wave bands. Until now, science and technology at THz frequencies has been
underdeveloped compared to the rest of the electromagnetic spectrum, leaving a gap, the “Terahertz
Gap”, for scientists and engineers to do more research and developing works. In the past years,
interests in the Terahertz Gap have been increased drastically due to the extremely great application
potential and the importance in science and technology. The seminar will present a Review of this
Frontier science and technology:
1. Introduction
2. Principle of Terahertz radiation generation and amplification,
3. THz Generation based on ultrashort pulse laser and nonlinear crystal,
4. THz quantum cascade lasers,
5. THz generation by means of free electrons,
6. Other approaches.
Biography
Professor Liu Shenggang obtained his PhD at the Chengdu Institute of Radio Engineering in 1958, under the
supervision of Professor I. V. Lebedev of Moscow Institute of Energy. He was the president of the
University of Electronic Science and Technology from 1986 to 2001. He is a Fellow of IEEE and member
of 9 International Committee of International Conferences. He is an Academician of the Chinese Academy
of Science and Honorary Professor of 5 Universities in China. He has been Chairman of Academic
Committee of 3 National Key Laboratories of China and Chairman of 11 International Symposiums. He has
been a visiting professor to 9 esteemed Universities overseas including the City University of Hong Kong.
He has published 170 papers and his area of interest is in microwave interactions with plasma. He is going
to be awarded the K. J. Button International Prize in September in Japan.
