Topic: U.S. History post-War of 1812

Introduction:
We will watch a 7 minute video clip about James Monroe from “The Presidents” DVD
series from the History Channel.

Learner Objectives:
• 11th grade students will be able to identify main themes in American expansion
• 11th grade students will be able to recognize the significance of the Monroe Doctrine
• 11th grade students will be able to distinguish opposing arguments concerning the topic of
slavery

Materials:
Image of ‘American Progress’ (online)
RAC model worksheet
The American Spirit textbook reading
The American Pageant textbook (map)
Chapter 12 outline
In-class worksheet

Procedure:
1. Lead discussion by going through in-class worksheet, mainly by asking students what they
already know about the material.
2. Have students discuss their RAC worksheets with everyone
3. Go back to the in-class worksheet and finish talking about the Monroe Doctrine
