Scene I

NARRATOR King Uther loved Igraine of Cornwall but he couldn’t marry

her. Merlin, the
Magician said he would help if Uther gave him his first son.
Uther and Igraine
were married and they had a baby son, Arthur.

CHAMBERMAID It’s a boy, my lady

IGRAINE How wonderful ! Come and see your new little brother, Morgana.
We can call him
Arthur

MORGANA I don’t want to look at him

IGRAINE Dear, now you must take care of him

CHAMBERMAID Who’s there? What do you want?

MERLIN It’s me Merlin. You must give the boy to me. King Uther
commands it

IGRAINE Don’t take him!

MERLIN The boy is mine, but don’t worry. I will give him to a good family.
They can look after
Until his time comes

IGRAINE What do you mean? I don’t understand.

MERLIN When Uther dies, Arthur will be king, a great king of England.
That is all you need to know. Now we must go

IGRAINE No! Don’t take him away!

MORGANA Good! I don’t want a brother. I can be powerful too; as

powerful as a king.

Scene II
NARRATOR Merlin carried the tiny creature for many miles until he
reached the home of Sir
Hector, an old friend.

SIR HECTOR Merlin, I have not seen you for many years. Come in and
make yourself at home.

3
I am sure my wife and my son Kay will be delighted to meet
you.

MERLIN And I will be delighted to meet them. But first I must ask
something of you.

NARRATOR Merlin unwrapped the bundle he had been carrying and held
up the baby.
SIR HECTOR Merlin! Is that your child?

MERLIN No, and I cannot say right now who his parents are. But I am
asking you to take him –
His name is Arthur- and raise him as your own.

SIR HECTOR My wife and I will raise Arthur as if he were our own flesh and
blood.

MERLIN Thank you. (To himself) Britain thanks you.

Scene III

NARRATOR Fourteen years later, King Uther called Merlin to his bedside.
He knew that
Death was after him. In the meantime the war was
devastating the country. The
Pagans wanted to conquer the land and other kings waited
for Uther’s death to
fight for his throne.

KING UTHER I’m dying, old friend. Take my sword. You know what to do
with it.

MERLIN Is it not your desire that your son Arthur shall take the kingdom
after you,
With your blessing?

KING UTHER Such is my desire. With God's blessing I wish my son Arthur
to take this kingdom after me, and all that love me must
follow him

NARRATOR Those around the bed looked at Merlin darkly because nobody
had heard of a
Son called Arthur.

Scene IV

3
NARRATOR The king was dead. The archbishop invited all the knights to a
mass at Christmas Eve in London. There in the middle of the churchyard
appeared a great stone with a rich sword inserted.

KNIGHT 1 There is something weird. That stone was not here before.

KNIGHT 2 Look! Have you seen the words on the stone? (reading) The
person who can pull
this sword from the Stone will be the real King of all England.

ARCHBISHOP Wait! Finish your prayers to the Lord and then have a try
with the sword.(after some attempts). Well , it seems that The king is not
here yet. There will be a great tournament on New Year’s day and all the
men of the country wil have a chance to be king.

Scene V.

NARRATOR Sir Hector, Kay and Arthur went to London for the
tournament.

ARTHUR I want to be a famous knight when I am older

KAY Don’t be silly. You aren’t strong or tall enough.

SIR HECTOR Look! Swordfighting. Why don’t you try, Kay?

KAY Oh no! I have forgotten my sword at the inn. Arthur, will you go back
for it?

ARTHUR Yes, I will , Kay. I’ll be back soon and you will fight. (Later) Hmm!
There is a sword
I can take that to Kay. Nobody seems to want it. Then I don’t
need to go back to the
Inn.

NARRATOR Arthur took the sword and gave it to Kay.

KAY Arthur, where have you got this wonderful sword?

ARTHUR Kay, it’s the sword that was on the stone

SIR HECTOR That’s impossible Arthur. We cannot believe it. Let’s go there
and check it

3
NARRATOR By that time everybody had heard about the news. They all
went to the stone to see it with their eyes.

SIR HECTOR Arthur, Can you put this sword back in its place and pull it
out again?

ARTHUR Yes, sir, easily

NARRATOR Arthur put back the sword. Sir Hector tried to take it out, but
failed

SIR HECTOR Now, you try, Kay. Well Arthur, it’s your turn

A WOMAN He is pulling the sword from the stone!

A MAN But no man can move the sword and he’s only a boy

A WOMAN He is Uther’s heir. He is the king

ARTHUR What’s happening? Why are they kneeling? Why are they calling
me king?

MERLIN Because it’s true, Arthur. I am Merlin, the Magician and this is
Uther’s
Sword. You are now King of England
