Geometric Method for two unknowns in sum of
forces.
We know that the two horizontal forces add up to zero.
We also know that the two vertical forces add up to F.
If we can make the two horizontals equal then the
verticals will represent the split in F.

Geometric Method for two unknowns in sum of
forces.
If we can make the two horizontals equal then the
verticals will represent the split in F.
The left force is in degrees so we use sin and cos to
get the ratios.
The hypotenuse is 1 when
using sine and cosine.
hyp = 1
sin 24
= 0.4067
cos 24 = 0.9135

Now we need to make the horizontals equal.
We need a multiplier for 0.9135 to turn it into 3.
Use 3÷0.9135 = 3.284 < multiplier
The right hypotenuse.
The hypotenuse is 1 when 22 + 32 = 13
using sine and cosine.
sin 24 hyp = 1 √13
= 0.4067
x 3.284
1.336
cos 24 = 0.9135
x 3.284
3.000
Now we multiply all sides of the
left triangle by 3.284.

Now that we have the left and right forces balanced we
can say that the vertical forces must balance also.
This means we want (1.336 + 2) to equal 40.0kN.
It doesn't equal 40 so we need a magical conversion
factor M that will make it happen.
Don't forget the hypotenuse.
1 x 3.284 = 3.284
hyp = 3.284 √13

(1.336 + 2) x M = 40.0kN.
Solve for M = 40.0 kN = 11.99 kN

This magical conversion factor
M = 11.99 kN will convert all
our triangle ratios into the right
answers.

Lets check to see if the forces balance.
Σ V = 0 = 40.0 +16.02 + 23.98
0 = 40.0 + 40.0 so checks
3.284 x 11.99 √13 x 11.99
= 39.38 kN = 42.23 kN
1.336 x 11.99 2 x 11.99
= 16.02 kN = 23.99 kN
3.000 x 11.99 3 x 11.99
= 35.97 kN = 35.97 kN
