The 802.11 represents wireless local area networks i.

e WLANs, was finalised in 1997 by

IEEE. WLANs can be designed in 2 ways

1. Infrastructure:

a. mobile stations or mobile nodes are interconnected to the internet through the access
point. That access point can also be treated as the point where gateway and server can
communicate with each other.

b. These type of networks provides a practical solution for the offices where requirement
of accessing internet is more.

c. All mobile stations are transmitting their signal to the nearest access point (AP) and it
serves as a wireless basestation.

2. Ad-hoc:

a. In this case, mobile stations are connected with each other but not to the internet. Data
transmission from one mobile station to the other mobile station can be done
dynamically. For this it uses one of the dynamic network topology out of the number
of different network topologies.

b. In this Basic Service Set (BSS) places major role because it isolates to a backbone
distributed via an AP.
