DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION
TUTORIAL 9
MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

1. Solve the following equations by using the method of variation of parameters:

a) (D 2
)
−1 y = ex +1 b) (D 2
)
+ 1 y = sec 2 x csc x
c) (D 2
) 2x
− 3D + 2 y = e /(1 + e ) 2x
d) (D 2
)
− 1 y = 2(1 − e −2 x ) −1 / 2
e) (D 2
)
+ 2 D + 2 − 1 y = e − x csc x f) (D 2
)
− D y = cos 2 x

2. Observe that x and e x are solutions of the homogeneous equation associated with
(1 − x) y "+ xy '− y = 2( x − 1) 2 e− x .
Use this fact to solve the nonhomogeneous equation.

3. If y1 = e 2 x and y 2 = xe 2 x be the solutions of the homogeneous equation

y"−4 y '+4 y = 0 .
Find solutions of the nonhomogeneous equation y"−4 y '+4 y = ( x + 1)e 2 x .

4. If y1 = cos 3x and y 2 = sin 3 x be the solutions of the homogeneous equation

associated with 4 y"+36 y = csc 3 x . Use this fact to solve the nonhomogeneous
equation.

5. If y1 = cos 2 x and y 2 = sin 2 x be the solutions of the homogeneous equation

associated with y"+4 y = tan 2 x . Use this fact to solve the nonhomogeneous
equation.

6. By using a suitable method including exponential shift, solve the following

equations

a) ( D − 3) 2 y = e 3 x b) ( D 2 − D − 2) y = 36 xe 2 x
d) D 2 (D + 4 ) y = 96e −4 x
2
c) ( D 2 − 2 D + 1) y = xe x + 7 x + 2
e) ( D − 1) 2 y = e x sec x tan x f) ( D 2 + 2 D + 1) y = 48e − x cos 4 x

7. Find the general solutions of the Euler Cauchy equation below:

a) x 2 y '' − 2 xy '−4 y = 0 b) 4 x 2 y '' + 8 xy '+ y = 0

c) x 2 y '' − xy '+ y = 0 d) x 3 y ''' − 2 x 2 y ' '+3 y '−3 y = 0
e) x 3 y ''' + 5 x 2 y ' '+7 xy '+8 y = 0

b) x 2 y′′ − 4 xy′ + 6 y = ln x 2
4 3
c) x 2 y′′ − 3 xy′ + 13 y = 4 + 3x [ y = x [c cos(3ln x) + c
