Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 System overview

2. SYSTEM OVERVIEW

2.1 General

The Kongsberg Seatex AS AIS 200 P Automatic Identification System (AIS) uses VHF
communication to transmit and receive AIS data. An AIS system operates primarily on two
dedicated VHF channels, AIS 1 – 161.975 MHz and AIS 2 – 162.025 MHz. Where these
channels are not available regionally, the AIS can be set use other designated channels.

The system broadcasts the vessel's position, speed and course over ground as well as static
and voyage related information. Short safety related text messages can be sent between
vessels or broadcast from shore based AIS stations or Aids to Navigation like buoys and
lighthouses. The on-board installed system is designed to operate automatically and as a
stand-alone unit. In addition to transmission of AIS data, the system can continuously receive
position information from other vessels or shore based stations.

2.1.1 Coverage

The radio coverage range is similar to other VHF applications and is dependent on the height
of the antennas and antenna types utilized. The propagation differs from that of a radar, due to
the longer wavelength, so it is possible to "see" around bends and behind islands if the
landmasses are not too high. A typical value to be expected between vessels is 20 - 30
nautical miles depending on antenna elevation.

Low antenna heights, as can often be necessary when using portable equipment, can reduce
this range significantly.

7
Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 System overview

2.1.2 AIS information content

AIS information is exchanged automatically between vessels, vessels and shore based stations
and vessels and Aids to Navigation like buoys and lighthouses. The information transmitted
by the AIS system is grouped into four categories:

2.1.2.1 Static data

• MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) number

• Call sign and name
• IMO number
• Length and beam
• Location of position fixing antennas on the ship

2.1.2.2 Voyage related data

• Ship's draught
• Hazardous cargo type
• Destination and ETA (at Master's discretion)
• Type of ship

2.1.2.3 Dynamic data

• Position with accuracy indication and integrity status

• Time in UTC
• COG (Course over ground)
• SOG (Speed over ground)
• Heading
• Navigational status
• Rate of turn

2.1.2.4 Safety-related messages

• Reading and writing short safety related messages

2.1.2.5 Data reporting and transmission rates

AIS data as stated above are autonomously sent at different update rates. The reporting rates
are dependent on the ship's navigational mode. Dynamic information is dependent on speed
and course alteration while static and voyage related data are transmitted every 6 minutes or
on request. Thus fast ferries will report their navigational data at a higher update rate than
ships at anchor. The following reporting rates apply for default SOLAS operation:

8
Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 System overview

Ship's Manoeuvring Condition Nominal Reporting Interval

Ship at anchor 3 min.
Ship 0 to 14 knots 10 sec.
Ship 0 to 14 knots and changing course 3 1/3 sec.
Ship 14 to 23 knots 6 sec.
Ship 14 to 23 knots and changing course 2 sec.
Ship > 23 knots 2 sec.
Ship > 23 knots and changing course 2 sec.

MAC xx: the processing card's MAC address.

Note! If a local PC is used outside a network server, the AIS unit and the PC must have
a network address that puts the AIS unit and the PC on the same subnet. An
example of such a configuration: AIS unit's IP address: 10.0.21.10. PC's address:
10.0.21.11. The Subnet mask must in addition be set to 255.255.255.0 on both the
PC and the AIS unit.

6.2.4 Configuring external serial ports

The serial port baud rate must be set up according to external instrumentation. The sensor
interfaces comply with the NMEA 0183, version 3. Change the baud rates accordingly.
Enter the Serial page by selecting Settings in the Main Menu, and Serial in the Settings
menu. In the Serial page, press EDIT to start editing the baud rate. Hold OK to save.

6.2.5 VHF data link

The VHF page includes ON/OFF status for transmitter and VDL answer mode.

ON/OFF status: The transmitter setting is recommended set to TX: ON.

The telegram structure for a VDM message may be as follows:

!AIVDM,1,1,,B,43n32Aiu:k:V<0gWgpTCD`Q00<0@,0*28

The "!" sign indicates that the telegram is in 6-bit NMEA binary format, which is not a direct
readable message. In this example the AIVDM indicates that this is data received from
another unit. The "B" indicates that the message is received on AIS channel B.

The telegram-structure for an ALR message may be as described below:

$AIALR,194544.00,3,A,V,AIS: RX channel 1 malfunction*23

The "$" sign indicates that this is an ASCII text message, where it is possible to read some of
the information directly. Typical use of this message type is for the alarm messages.

Typical data output via the PI serial or LAN port may be as follows:

!AIVDO,1,1,,,10071KhP000gWwpTCD;0;OvV2000,0*28
!AIVDM,1,1,,A,402M?giuIf99C0g`0:TCD:Q000S:,0*29

Data can be decoded/replayed and verified using an external system that is capable of reading
this kind of data and has necessary software for this functionality.

74
Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 AIS 200 P

There are two types of alarm messages, which can be output on the PI serial or LAN port. An
ALR-message, e.g. $AIALR, is output when an error situation arises. A TXT message, e.g.
$AITXT, is output when there is an indicator message. An error situation may arise if there is
a TX malfunction, while an indicator message may arise when differential corrections are
lost. The ALM LED in the front of the AIS 200 P will be lit if an error situation arises.

6.5.2.1 Battery status messages

The following battery status messages are available on the PI ports.

Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 AIS 200 P Operation

7. AIS 200 P OPERATION

7.1 General

The AIS 200 P, once activated, will continuously and autonomously broadcast the vessel's
position and all the static and dynamic information as required.

The vessel's speed and rate-of-turn will automatically determine the update rate. However, the
Master or an authorized person must manually input, at the start of the voyage or whenever
changes occur, the following voyage related data:

• ship's draught
• type of hazardous cargo (most significant hazard carried)
• destination and ETA (at master's discretion)
• the correct and actual navigational status
• safety related short messages, when appropriate

Caution! The Officer of the Watch (OOW) should always be aware that other ships
and, in particular, leisure craft, fishing boats and warships, and some coastal
shore stations including Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) centres, might not be
fitted with AIS. The OOW should also be aware that AIS fitted on other ships
as a mandatory carriage requirement might, under certain circumstances, be
switched off on the Master's professional judgment.

An AIS system should always be in operation. It is recommended that the AIS is not switched
off during port stays because of the value of the ship information to port authorities.

Whether at sea or in port, if the Master believes that the continued operation of AIS might
compromise the ship's safety or security, the VHF transmitting may be switched off. This
might be the case in sea areas where pirates and armed robbers are known to operate.

However, the VHF transmitting should be re-activated as soon as the source of danger has
disappeared.

It may be necessary to switch off the AIS or to reduce the transmission power during some
cargo handling operations. Actions of this nature should always be recorded in the ship's
logbook.

Reduction of power can be done by an AIS base station command, a DSC command or by
defining a region in channel management (MKD, P1).

83
Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 AIS 200 P Operation

7.2 Turning the AIS 200 P system ON

The system is turned ON when power is connected to the AIS 200 P and the external power
switch is set to ON. After a two-minute initialization period the unit will have full
functionality. The unit is switched OFF by the power switch. When switching OFF, the unit
should be off at least 10 seconds before being switched ON again.

7.3 Turning the WLAN ON or OFF

The WLAN can be turned ON or OFF by the top cover switch marked WLAN. The WLAN
should be switched OFF when not utilised.

Note! The MKD connector is not available on models with integrated MKD (A201P-5h-
WL-M).

7.4 Restarting the AIS 200 P system

The AIS 200 P Mobile Unit may be restarted by using the following procedure:

be entered into the AIS 200 P system.

If the Nav.Status or Voyage Data parameters are defined with a security level other than 0,
the access code has to be entered before these settings can be changed.

7.6.1 Setting the Navigational Status

It is important to set the navigational status with regard to the current vessel status as this
affects the reporting rate and information transmitted to other vessels.

For AIS 200 P press the VIEW button to activate the Main Menu, select Settings and
Nav.Status. Press EDIT to activate the predefined list. Select wanted status, hold OK to save.

7.6.2 Entering Voyage Data

92
Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 AIS 200 P power sources

9. AIS 200 P POWER SOURCES

The AIS 200 P can be operated on 10-30 VDC or from the internal Lithium Ion accumulator.

WARNING! The AIS 200 P contains a lithium ion battery inside the
equipment housing. The battery is completely covered by the
transponder housing and is watertight. Unless severe damage is
made to the housing there is no risk of explosion or fire. See
Appendix K - Information on transportation for labels and
symbols on equipment package.
To avoid possible fire, explosion, leakage or burn hazard do not
open the sealed unit. Do not attempt to recharge differently than
described herein, disassemble or heat above +75 C / 167 F or
incinerate.
The Lithium ion batteries should be handled according to
national rules and regulations. Special rules apply for
transportation and disposal of such batteries.
Observe normal safety precautions when charging and using
accumulators.

The AIS 200 P has been designed to operate on DC power or the internal batteries. The AIS
200 P will automatically switch to the batteries if the primary power source fails. The
batteries will be automatically charged when the unit is connected to a DC supply. Please
refer to chapter 3.1.1 for technical data regarding the DC power and the batteries. Charging
time and operation time are dependent of ambient temperature, battery health, charging status,
mode of operation and accessories connected. The accumulator can be replaced by factory
when required.

Accumulators should never be left in uncharged state as this will rapidly damage the capacity.
If the batteries are not used for some time it is recommended to charge the unit to between 15
and 50% of maximum. The battery capacity should be checked regularly when stored.

Note! The batteries are protected against too low and too high temperatures. The
recharging of the batteries will automatically stop if the internal temperature
becomes too high or too low. The charging will start again automatically when
the temperature falls within the limits. It is recommended to turn the AIS 200 P
OFF when the batteries are charged.

94
Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 Maintenance

10. MAINTENANCE

10.1 General

All units in the AIS 200 P system are "repair by replacement" units, and the operator is
therefore required to perform only a limited amount of preventive maintenance on the units.

A damaged unit that has to be shipped back to the supplier should be sent in the original
transportation box or another appropriate box. The return address is provided in the first
pages of this manual.

10.2 General maintenance

All connectors should be checked for good mechanical and electrical connections. Cables
should not be bent more than the minimum recommended bending radius and there should be
no sharp bends on coaxial cables. All cables should be fixed tight and rigid to their supporting
structure (bulkhead, mast etc.) and special care should be taken where cables run through
holes with sharp edges.

10.2.1 MKD Unit

The MKD will under normal use require little maintenance. If the unit requires any form of
cleaning, use fresh water and a mild soap solution (not a detergent). It is important to avoid
using chemical cleaners and hydrocarbons such as diesel, petrol etc.

10.2.2 Mobile Unit

A properly operating Mobile Unit will indicate transmitting and receiving messages by short
blinks on the TX and MSG LEDs. Inspecting the LEDs for normal operation gives a good
indication of the operating status. Any red LED indication means that further investigation
and servicing is necessary.

10.2.3 Batteries

The batteries should be charged as soon as possible when drained. This is automatically done
if the unit is connected to the VDC power source. Please refer to chapter 3.1.1 for technical
data regarding the batteries.

95
Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 Maintenance

Caution! To prevent damaging the batteries the following should always be carried
out:
• The power switch should be turned OFF within 24 hours if the AIS 200 P
has turned itself off after being operated on batteries.
• The unit should be charged within one week if the batteries have been
drained for power. Please refer to chapter 3.1.1 for technical data
regarding the batteries.

Caution! The capacity of the batteries will be reduced with time and the number of
charge cycles performed. It is recommended to change the battery when the
number of charging cycles has surpassed the given limit (see chapter 11.3.4)
or the battery capacity is outside specifications (see chapter 3.1.1). The
number of charge cycles performed is reported on the MKD and on the PI
interface. See chapter Error! Reference source not found. and 5.4.10
respectively.

10.3 Maintenance schedule

The following maintenance schedule should be observed:

10.3.1 Deployment

Check operation by turning the unit ON with the main switch on the outside of the unit. The
green LED above the main switch should light green showing that power is supplied to the
unit. Observe the MKD for normal operation. The unit should immediately boot up and start
sending messages after a few minutes. Green or amber light on the TX LED indicate this. The
GPS LED should blink steadily with green light once each second indicating good GPS
reception. If other AIS units are within reception range, messages should be received as
shown by blinks on the MSG lamp. Green light indicates messages on channel A (161,975
MHz) and amber blinks indicate messages on channel B (162,025 MHz). There should be no
indications on the ALM (alarm) LED.

Observe the MKD for normal operation of the unit.

10.3.2 Periodical maintenance

The unit should be regularly checked regarding charging and battery conditions. At least once
a month is recommended.

1. Disconnect the VDC power source. Let the unit operate on batteries until the battery
protection circuit turns the power OFF.
2. Connect the VDC power cable and charge the batteries until the BAT led lights green
(see chapter 3.1.1 and 5.1 for details).
3. Disconnect the VDC power cable and turn the unit ON.
4. The unit should operate on batteries at least 5 hours.

96
Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 Maintenance

5. Connect the VDC power cable and charge the batteries until the BAT LED lights
green (see chapter 3.1.1 and 5.1 for details).

The batteries should be replaced if the battery operation time is too short. The battery
replacement have to be carried out by technicians authorized by Kongsberg Seatex AS.

In addition the following maintenance should be performed periodically:

• Clean the unit with a soft, lightly humid cloth.
• Inspect connectors for damage and corroded connection pins.
• Inspect cables and connectors for damage and short circuits.
• Inspect antennas and connectors for damage.

Damaged connectors, cables and connectors should be repaired as soon as possible.

10.3.3 Storage requirements

Prior to storage the following should be emphasized:

• The AIS 200 P should be clean.

• The AIS 200 P should be dry.
• The batteries should be charged for storage, (see chapter 3.1.1.).
• The connector caps should be mounted.
• The power switch should be switched OFF.
• The top cover clamps should be opened in order to allow air circulation.

To maintain the batteries the unit has to be assembled and powered up once every 2 months.
The unit should operate until the power is automatically turned off. Then charge the batteries
to the recommended level before storing the unit again. Please refer to chapter 3.1.1 for
technical data regarding the batteries.

10.4 Repairs

All repairs and modifications of the units should be carried out by qualified personnel. A
failed unit should be shipped back to the supplier for repair.

10.4.1 Exchanging antenna cables

1. Disconnect the power cable.

2. Dismount the damaged antenna cable. The new antenna cable must be as straight as
possible. Do not crush or crimp the cable, as this will affect the electrical properties of
the cable.
3. Connect the antenna cable to the antenna.
4. Connect the antenna cable to the unit and reapply power.

97
Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 Maintenance

Note! If the antenna cable is attached to the Mobile Unit, do not attach the antenna
cable to the antenna when the AIS 200 P is powered. If the antenna cable is short-
circuited with power on, the GPS receiver within the unit can be damaged.

10.4.2 Exchanging GPS or VHF antennas

1. Disconnect the power cable and switch the power switch OFF.
2. Dismount the failed antenna.
3. Mount the new antenna.
4. Connect the antenna cable to the antenna.

11. TROUBLESHOOTING

This chapter holds troubleshooting procedures that could be performed for checking hardware
and external interfaces.

11.1 General

The external LED, which is located above the power switch, will shine green if power is
supplied to the internal AIS unit. The LED indicators inside the lid can be used to monitor
status as well as data reception and transmission.

Amber
Green

Prior to any troubleshooting, the system should be restarted to see if this resolves the
problem.

• Restart the Mobile Unit by switching the power switch OFF. Wait for 2 minutes and
switch the unit ON again.

11.2 Hardware problems

Hardware problems can be divided into the following categories:

• Power supply failure

• GPS receiver failure
• VHF transceiver failure
• GPS and VHF antennas and cables
• Interface cables

103
Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 Troubleshooting

If the system outputs an alarm, the alarm condition can be read from the display.

11.2.1 Power supply failure

If the PWR LED at the front on the Mobile Unit does not light green, the system does not
receive any power. Use the following procedure to check for power failure.

• Check that external power has been connected.

• Verify that power cable dimensions are minimum 2.5 mm2.
• Verify that the supplied power is in accordance with the power specifications.
• If the system outputs alarms, the alarm condition can be read from the MKD.

11.2.2 GPS and VHF antenna cable connections

Typical problems when no GPS signal is received are that the GPS antenna cable and/or
connectors are damaged, or that the cables are not properly connected. In order to check for
antenna cable problems, ensure that the GPS antenna is disconnected. The Ohm reading
between the centre and the shield should be infinite if there is no short-circuit in the cable.
Make a short-circuit in the opposite end of the cable and measure the resistance. Now the
reading should be approximately 0 Ohm.

Bad or missing GPS coverage may lead to reporting problems.

11.2.3 GPS receiver failure

During normal operation the GPS LED inside the unit blinks green once each second. If the
GPS LED blinks amber, the AIS 200 P system computes no position data and the GPS
receiver inside the Mobile Unit should be checked.

Disconnect the GPS antenna cable at the side of the unit. The voltage output on the GPS
antenna connector should be approximately 4.8 – 5.0 V if the GPS receiver supplies voltage
to the antenna. If not, this indicates problems with the GPS receiver. Disconnect and
reconnect power to see if the Mobile Unit starts up as normal. If not, consult Kongsberg
Seatex AS for advice.

GPS receivers may need some time to acquire the correct position. Normally this happens if
the GPS receiver is turned ON in a position far away from the last recorded position. To
speed up the acquisition time, the GPS receiver can be reset from the MKD menu.

11.2.4 VHF transceiver failure

If there is no activity on the TX and/or the MSG LED inside the unit, this indicates a
transmitter or receiver problem. Disconnect and reconnect power to see if the Mobile Unit
starts up as expected. If not, consult Customer Support for advice.

104
Kongsberg AIS 200 P Instruction Manual, rev. 3 Troubleshooting

11.3 External data interface problems

External data connections may have incorrect:

• Data input from main GPS source
• Data input from vessel heading sensor

Please check that the correct NMEA version is used.

11.3.1 Data input from main GPS/GNSS source

Position data input to the AIS 200 P system is received from the vessel's main GPS/GNSS
receiver using an RS-422 serial line communication. If data are not received in the AIS 200 P
Mobile Unit, the following steps should be taken in order to check for missing position data:
1. Check that corresponding cable connections are correctly terminated. If properly
connected, check the serial line communication (baud rate, parity, number of bytes
transmitted, number of stop bits) between transmitting (vessel GPS/GNSS receiver) and
receiving (parameters to be checked from display) end.
2. If OK, check that the position output format from the GPS/GNSS receiver is in accordance
with the expected input position format.

If the Mobile Unit still does not receive position data, consult Customer Support for advice.

11.3.2 Heading from vessel heading sensor

Heading data is received from the vessel's gyro. If input data is missing, the following steps
should be taken in order to check for missing heading data:
1. Check that corresponding cable connections are correctly terminated. If correctly
connected, check the serial line communication (baud rate, parity, number of bytes
transmitted, number of stop bits) between transmitting (vessel heading sensor) and
receiving (parameters to be checked from the MKD unit) end.
2. If OK, check that the heading output format from the compass is in accordance with the
expected input heading format.

If the Mobile Unit still does not receive heading data, consult Customer Support for advice.

11.3.3 AIS unit restarts

If the AIS unit frequently restarts, please note that the AIS is dependent upon VDC from the
ship's power supply or by connecting the supplied AC/DC converter to a 110/230 VDC power
outlet. See Power supply failure on page 104.

1. Check that external power source has sufficient current rating (recommended 4 A) and that

105

2. power cables are within specifications for such a power consumption.

3. Check that the ships power supply is stable and without transients that may affect the AIS
unit.

11.3.4 Battery warnings

The following warnings are shown on the MKD and the PI Interfaces. (See chapters 5.4.10

13. APPENDIX B - DIGITAL INTERFACE IEC

61162-1

13.1 Hardware

The recommended wiring (the figures below are excerpts from IEC 61162-2, ed. 1) is as
shown on the drawings. The A, B and C designation correspond with the data signals. There
may be several listeners (receivers) but only one talker (transmitter). For long lines we
recommend to use a terminating resistor (120 Ohm between A' and B' at the receiving end).
Avoid stubs or make them as short as possible. The common wire designated "C" is the signal
ground reference and this wire shall be isolated from the outer shielding. The outer cable
shield shall be continuous (unbroken) through the installation, but shall not be terminated to
any part of the receiver.

Shielded twisted pair cable with third-wire is shown below. The common "C" wire may be
one wire of a pair of another port's common connection wire "C", if they have the same
destination.

Excerpt from IEC 61162-2, ed. 1 (NMEA 0183 version 3.0, 3.5.2).

13.2 IEC 61162-1 sentences and proprietary messages

13.2.1 General

In order to configure and service the AIS 200 Mobile Unit there are some proprietary
messages that can be used on the PI or Pilot interface. The AIS Mobile Unit uses the NMEA
registered "STX" manufacturer's code. When setting parameters in the AIS Mobile Unit use
the $PSTXS command. To query the AIS Mobile Unit for information, use the $PSTXQ
command. Responses from the AIS Mobile Unit uses the $PSTXR command. The proprietary
messages comply with IEC 61162-1 and have the following structure:

$ P STX S , <Msg ID> DATA * <FCS> <CR> <LF>

Field Definition
$ or ! Hex 24 or Hex 21 - Start of sentence
P Hex 50 – Proprietary sentence ID
STX Kongsberg Seatex AS mnemonic code
S or R or Q S = Set, R = Response, Q = Query
<Msg ID> Message ID identifying a specific sentence
DATA Data portion, unique for each Message ID.
* Checksum delimiter
<FCS> Checksum
<CR><LF> End of message

The messages formats are described in the document named 3149 AIS Interface Specification
issued by Kongsberg Seatex AS. Please contact our Customer Support department if the
document is required.

OPERATION MODE

AIS 200 BF is an AIS mobile station with extended features, giving the user extended control
of how the AIS interacts with its surroundings. The BF extension enables the user to
configure transmission of radio messages, encrypt radio messages and control how the AIS
Mobile Unit handles various interrogation and configuration messages.

The extension is mode based, where each mode consists of various parameters that can be
enabled or disabled by modifying the configuration file of the AIS unit. There are three
different modes, Standard AIS, Silent mode and Secure mode.

Please refer to the AIS BF - User Manuals for further details:

A102-07 - Blowfish.
A 102-08 - AES / DE.
A 102-09 - AES / DI.
