© Carrier Corporation 1979

Form 40RR-2P

The 40RR Weathermaker® packaged air handlers provide an efficient source of conditioned air in factories, shops, offices or restaurants. Coupled with appropriate condensing units, the 40RR Series produces nominal cooling capacities of 88,000 to 638,000 Btuh. Accessory steam or hot water heating coils produce heating capacities in the range of 118,000 to 1,585,000 Btuh.

Slim proportions (less than 3 ft wide) allow these units to be floor mounted or ceiling-suspended. Modular construction (014 size and larger) permits the fan section to be mounted in front of, on top of, or behind the coil section. In addition, the fan section can be rotated for front, top, or rear air discharge ... horizontal or vertical, as you require. 40RR008 thru 024 units are used with a plenum or ductwork; 028 thru 054 units are connected directly to duct systems.

Carrier quality construction features assure an attractive and durable unit Removable casing panels provide easy access for servicing Heavy-gage, galvanized steel is enamel-coated for corrosion resistance Units are good-looking and may be installed in the conditioned space where required.

Belt-drive, centrifugal fans move air quietly - may be used with ductwork or for free blow (direct discharge) into the conditioned space. Resilient motor mounts help absorb vibration.

Insulated casing minimizes condensation and reduces sound levels.

Adaptable to heat pump service

The 40RR012 thru 054 units can be used for heat pump service with the addition of an accessory piping package. Nominal cooling range is 121,000 to 518,000 Btuh; heating range is 118,000 to 556,000 Btuh.

The Carrier line of 40RR packaged air handling units offers versatile performance for a business that demands optimum efficiency and reliability.

Modular construction allows interchangeable fan section arrangements .

-+j)election procedure (with example)

Cooling - 40RR

1. Determine the cooling load and temperature and quantity of air entering the evaporator.

Given:

Grand Total Heat 200,000 Btuh

Sensible Heat 130,000 Btuh

Air Temp Ent Indoor Coil. . . . . . . .. 80 F db, 67 F wb

Air Qty Ent Indoor Coil. 6000 cfm

Ductwork Static Pressure Loss 0.8 in. wg

2. Determine unit selection and coil refrigerant temperature.

Enter Cooling Capacities table for 6000 cfm. Select a 40RR016 unit which has a total capacity of 228,000 and 195,000 Btuh at 40 and 45 F coil refrigerant temperature respectively. By interpolation, coil refrigerant temperature of 44.2 F is needed to give a total capacity of 200,000 Btuh. Sensible capacity is 151,000 Btuh. Cooling load is satisfied.

Heating - 40RR

1. Determine heating load and temperature of air entering the indoor coil.

Given:

Load 375,000 Btuh

Entering Air Temperature 70 F

Two-row Hot Water Coils with entering water temperature of 200 F.

2. Find the heating capacity .

Enter Heating Ratings table for the 40RR016 unit at 6000 cfm. A two-row hot water coil delivers 428,000 Btuh (based on 60 F entering air temperature). Since existing entering air temperature is 70 F, enter the Btu Constants table for hot water coils at 200 F entering water temperature and this 70 F entering air. Read a constant of .90.

428,000 x .90 = 385,200 Btuh

Fan - 40RR

1. Determine fan speed and brake horsepower.

From the table titled Pressure Loss of Unit Components, read a loss of .06 in. wg for a two-row hot-water heating coil.

External static pressure = .80 + .06

= .86 in. wg

Enter 40RR016 Fan Performance table at 6000 cfm and .86 in. wg. Interpolate and read fan speed of 795 rpm and 2.41 bhp. Checking the table on page 5, the factoryinstalled motor for a 40RR016 is a 2 hp. Since the bhp required is 2.41, a 3 hp motor should be used. From the tables on page 6, a 3 hp motor and drive can be selected.

To select an outdoor unit for this 40RR016 indoor section, refer to the Combination Ratings sheets for Carrier condensing units.
