Background
When the Manitoba Housing Authority requested the in-
stallation of a SolarWall® heating and ventilation system
during a retrofit of one of their apartment buildings, they
had several objectives in mind, specifically:
1. Upgrading the corridor ventilation system in order to
improve indoor air quality, and compensate for the
problems of negative pressure.
2. Improving energy efficiency and permanently reduc-
ing their heating costs through the use of a renew-
able energy source.
3. Upgrading the mechanical system, seeing as it was
past its expected service life.
Solution
The upgrades made to the control system also benefit the
solar heating system. The new system incorporates a two
speed control of the corridor and suite ventilation system.
The end result is improved temperature control, improved
indoor air quality, increased energy efficiency, and alarm
monitoring.
Results
The projected energy savings, using 2002 natural gas
prices, were $17,500 each year. As well, Manitoba Hous-
ing Authority will save $21,200 annually from the up-
grades to the control system. In addition to these cost
savings, the city is also reducing their annual greenhouse
gas emissions by 236 tones as a result of the solar air
heating system.

A 676 m2 (7175 ft2) SolarWall® system was installed on
the upper 14 stories of the south masonry wall, and it is
tied into a new roof-mounted air make-up unit. The solar
panels preheat the ventilation air for the common areas in
the apartment building.
