Technical Presentation – Outline Task Sheet

Title of Presentation
1. Is it a technical topic? Justify
• For this presentation I chose wastewater treatment process and the
importance.
• Wastewater treatment process is a technical topic because this topic is a
part of my core subject as civil engineering student.

Audience

1. How did you determine the knowledge level of your audience?

I determined the knowledge of the audience by the background field of studies of
the audience. As in UTP the audience are all from engineering or information
technology background as well as business study.

2. How did this information influence your presentation?

This information influence my presentation such as I will deliver information that
are related to the audience background study.

3. How do you plan to gain the audience’s attention?

• I also will stress about the importance of the wastewater treatment process
that is an essential process to produce clean water before it will be
discharge to the river.
• I also will try to use visual aids and supporting data to make the audience
can get the clearer view about this topic.
Presentation
1. Introduction
• What is the purpose and importance of choosing this topic?
 The purpose of this topic is to give information and elaboration on
how the wastewater treatment process is done according to the
proper steps and stages.
 The importance of choosing this topic is to expose the wastewater
treatment process to the audience.
 In this class, most of the audience are not from civil engineering
course, then I want to try to share my knowledge about this topic to
the audience.
 The wastewater treatment process is the continuing process but
many of us did not bother on how the process is done. Without this
wastewater treatment process, we as consumers cannot get the
clean water from river. The river also will be polluted if the
wastewater is discharged to the river without proper wastewater
treatment.

• How is the topic relevant to the audience?

Water is the most fundamental building block of life. Most of us are
fortunate to be living in a place where water is literally at our fingertips.
Wastewater is “used” water that is deposited into drains by residents and
businesses. Flushing the toilet, taking a shower, and running the washing
machine are all examples of everyday activities that produce wastewater.
This wastewater drains down the sink or toilet and travels through a
network of underground pipes known as the sanitary sewer system.
• What do you expect the audience to learn from the presentation
(objectives)?
 The audience will get the clearer view on how the wastewater
treatment process is done.
 The audience also will learn why wastewater treatment process is
important.

• What is your thesis statement?

Wastewater treatment process is an essential process and it is important
for mankind to get clean water for the sake of our health and our life.

• List the main points that will support your thesis statement.
 The stages involve in wastewater treatment process.
i. Collection
Preliminary treatment
Primary treatment
Secondary treatment
Tertiary treatment / Disinfection
The importance of wastewater treatment process.

• How are you establishing credibility?

 I establishing my credibility by revision of literal sources this topic
that I have taken in water and wastewater engineering subject last
semester.
 I also try to review the books, assignments, charts that were used
before.
 Furthermore, I have knowledge about this topic that I gain not only
by surfing on the net but using other proven materials.
2. Body
• Which organizational pattern are you using? Justify your choice.
In my presentation I use the chronological sequences to explain the
process of wastewater treatment. I will use logical sequence idea to
express on importance and benefits of wastewater treatment.

• List the supporting ideas for each main point.

 The stages involve in wastewater treatment process.
i. Collection – the wastewater from domestic are collect
through the sewerage pipes.
ii. Preliminary treatment - the first treatment process, consists
of the removal of substances that may interfere with the
downstream processes or be detrimental to the plant
equipment.
iii. Primary treatment - the wastewater enters two primary
clarifiers (sedimentation basins) which remove suspended
and floating material.
iv. Secondary treatment - consists of two steps which remove
the dissolved and colloidal organic material not removed by
the primary treatment using a conventional activated sludge
process.
v. Tertiary treatment / Disinfection - is used to destroy
pathogenic (disease-producing) organisms that is is
accomplished by UV disinfection.

The importance of wastewater treatment process.

i. Eliminating the discharge of pollutants
ii. Obtaining water quality which provides for recreation in
and on the water.
iii. Domestic water treatment removes physical, chemical and
biological contaminants from wastewater.

• How do you ensure that there is coherent transition from one main
point to the next main point?
After each main point I will again sum up the content of the point then I
will make interchange from the previous point to the next point. The
coherent transition is from the chronological sequence that is involve the
step by step process. The process cannot be overlap with each other.

• Describe how you are going to summarize after each main point.
After each main point I will stress the important content or keyword about
each point.

3. Conclusion
• Describe how you are going to summarize the entire presentation.
First of all I will tell the audience means I will give brief ideas bout this
topic. Then I will tell the audience what I want to tell them such as explain
the content in more details with the elaboration. And finally I tell them
what I have told them in a way that I summarize my presentation.

• Describe how you are going to reiterate the purpose and importance
of the whole presentation to relate to your audience.
I will ask the audience to think what will happen if the wastewater
treatment process is not properly done.

Question and Answer Session

1. List some of the questions that you anticipate from the audience.
i. What are the parameters involve in wastewater treatment process.
ii. The benefits of wastewater treatment process to the mankind.
iii. What is the chemical substances used in disinfection step.
Practice Session
1. How did you practice your speech?
I practice my speech sometimes alone with myself and sometimes in front of the
mirror in a way to see the gestures. I always practice in my room when I have free
time. I try to practice as many times as I can to make improvement and reduce
errors.
2. Which area of your speech needed improvement?
The style of delivery. My delivery parts need to have more content than in my
slides.

3. Did you stay within the time limit?

When I practice my speech, I have set the stopwatch then I can manage to finish
the entire presentation in almost about seven minutes. In spite the other three
minutes are for question and answer session. Then sum up seven and three
minutes, I have totally ten minutes.
