SCENE 1

(Somewhere Over the Rainbow is the prelude to this scene. The music
fades out as Dorothy walks on stage)

Dorothy: Oh, TOTO, I wish that I could go somewhere over that

rainbow. I just know that there is more to the world than
this! I want to leave ________ and see the rest of the
world!

Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must

be. It's not a place you can get to by a boat or a train. It's
far, far away -- behind the moon -- beyond the rain --

(Tornado appears)

SCENE 2

Dorothy: (Steps out of the house, removes her hands from her
head, looks around, sees flowers) TOTO, I don’t think we
are in _________ anymore!

(Dorothy and TOTO curiously look around)

Glinda: Hello there. Are you a good witch or a bad witch, which?

Dorothy: (Startled and amazed by Glinda’s beauty) Oh, I am not a

witch. Witches are old and ugly! (Munchkins laugh in the
background) What was that?

3
Glinda: The Munchkins. They are laughing because I am a witch.
I’m Glinda the good witch of the North.

(Dorothy reacts… curtseys)

Dorothy: A Witch? But I never heard of a pretty witch before? I

thought witches were mean with big noses.

Glinda (Laughing) That is because I am a good witch! Well,

Welcome to OZ! The munchkins would like to thank you.
It is all right you can come out now. Come out come out
wherever you are and meet the young lady who fell from a
star.

Dorothy: What is a Munchkin?

Munchkins: (Giggle and dance) WE ARE!!! WE ARE!!! (They go and

whisper something to Glinda)

Glinda: And you, my dear, are their national hero!

Munchkins: Who are you?

Dorothy: I am Dorothy. From___________.

M1: Is __________ a very big kingdom?

Dorothy: ____________ isn’t a kingdom. (TOTO Barks)

M2: Do you have magic in _________?

Dorothy: No, but we have Samsung. (Dorothy gives him her

walkman. The munchkins examine it very carefully. They
do not know how to use it.)

M3: We want to thank you.

4
Dorothy: Thank me? But why?

(Music)

M1: We thank you very sweetly.

M3: For doing it so neatly.

M2: You killed her so completely.

Munchkins: So we thank you very sweetly. Ding Dong the witch is

dead!

Dorothy: What do you mean? I haven’t killed anyone!

M3: Then how do you explain that? (Points)

Dorothy: (Dorothy looks.

looks. There is a pair of beautiful red ruby
slippers sticking out from under the house) Oh no! She
must have been beneath the house when we hit the
ground.

Glinda: The Munchkins are very happy because you killed the
wicked Witch of the East. They would like to give you a
present.

M2: (Places slippers on Dorothy’s feet) How do they make you

feel?

Dorothy: Magical!

M1: All hail Dorothy, our new queen! You will stay in
Munchkinland won’t you?

(Suddenly there is a loud noise. The Munchkins run and

hide. The Wicked Witch of the West appears
appears.)

5
Dorothy: (Dorothy holds Toto. Dorothy is frightened. She
speaks with Glinda) I thought you said she was dead.

Glinda: That was her sister, the Wicked Witch of the East. This
is the Wicked Witch of the West. And she's worse than
the other one was.

Witch: Who killed my sister? Who killed the Witch of the East?
Was it you? Answer me!

Glinda: Leave her alone!

Witch: You stay out of this! So it was you, was it? You killed
her...didn't you?

Dorothy: No, No! It was an accident! I didn't mean to kill

anybody...Really I didn't!

Witch Didn't mean it, eh? Accident, eh? Well, my little pretty, I
can cause accidents, too!

Glinda: Aren't you forgetting something? The ruby slippers?

Witch: The slippers -- yes...the slippers! (Witch goes to the

feet of her dead sister) They're gone! The ruby
slippers! What have you done with them? Give them
back to me, or I'll ---

Glinda: It's too late! (Points to Dorothy’s feet) There they...are,

and there they'll stay!

Witch: Give me back my slippers!

Glinda: Don’t give them to her. Their magic must be very

powerful, or she wouldn't want them so badly!

Witch: You stay out of this, Glinda, or I'll fix you as well!

6
Glinda: (Laughs) Oh, rubbish! You have no power here. Be
gone, before somebody drops a house on you,
too.

Witch: Very well and as for you, my fine lady, it's true, I can't
hurt you here and now as I'd like, but just try to stay
out of my way.... just try! I'll get you, my...pretty, and
your little dog, too! (Laughs and backs away from
Dorothy and Glinda -- the Munchkins hug the ground
with fear, the Witch disappears)

Glinda: It's all right. You can get up -- she’s gone. (The
Munchkins all rise, start to move toward Glinda and
Dorothy
Dorothy as Glinda speaks to them) Pooh -- what a
smell! I'm afraid you've made rather a bad enemy of
the Wicked Witch of the West. The sooner you get out
of Oz, the safer you'll sleep, my dear.

Dorothy: Oh, I'd give anything to leave Oz, but which is the way
back to _________? I can't go the way I came.

Glinda: No, that's true. The only person who might

know would be the great and wonderful Wizard
of Oz himself!

Dorothy: The Wizard of Oz? Is he good or is he

wicked?

Glinda: Oh, very good, but very mysterious. He lives in the

Emerald City, and that's a long journey from here.

M2: Did you bring your broomstick with you?

Dorothy: No, I am afraid not.

7
Glinda: Well, then, you'll have to walk. The Munchkins will
walk you safely to the border of Munchkinland. And
remember, never let those ruby slippers off your feet
for a moment, or you will be in danger of the Wicked
Witch of the West.

Dorothy: But, how do walk to Emerald City?

Glinda: It's always best to start at the beginning

-- And all you do is follow the Yellow Brick
Road.

Dorothy: But -- what happens if I ---

Glinda: Just follow the Yellow Brick Road. (Glinda Exits)

Dorothy: (To audience) My! People come and go so quickly

here! Oh TOTO what shall we do?

M1: You must follow the yellow brick…

M2: Yellow brick….

M3: Yellow brick….

Munchkins: Follow the Yellow brick road!

SCENE 3

Dorothy: Thank you all very much. You have all been very kind.
(Dorothy and TOTO begin to follow the yellow brick
road. The chorus
chorus provides music. Dorothy dances.)
Follow the Yellow Brick Road.
Follow the Yellow Brick Road.
Follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow the Yellow Brick Road.

8
We are off to see the Wizard. The Wonderful Wizard of
OZ!

(Scarecrow enters as Dorothy

Dorothy walks)

Dorothy: Now which way do we go?

Scarecrow: That way is very nice. (His arm points right)

Dorothy: Who said that? (Toto barks at the Scarecrow)

Dorothy: Don't be silly, Toto. Scarecrows...don't talk.

Scarecrow: It's pleasant down that way, too.

Dorothy That's funny. Wasn't he pointing the other way?

Scarecrow: Of course, people do (The Scarecrow crosses his arms

and points in both directions) ...go both ways!

Dorothy: Why...you did say something, didn't you? (The

Scarecrow shakes his head, then nods) Can't you make
up your mind?

Scarecrow That's the trouble. I can't make up my mind. I haven't

got a brain -- only straw.

Dorothy How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?

Scarecrow I don't know. But some people without brains do an

awful lot of talking, don't they?

Dorothy Yes, I guess you're right. Well, we haven't really met

properly, have we?

Scarecrow: Why, no.

9
Dorothy: (Dorothy curtsies, speaks) How do you do?

Scarecrow: (Nods and speaks) Oh, I'm not feeling at all well. How
do you do?

Dorothy: Very well, thank you.

Scarecrow: You see it's very hard being stuck up here all day long.

Dorothy: Oh, dear -- that must be very uncomfortable. Can't

you get down? Here let me help you.

Scarecrow: Oh, that's very kind of you -- very kind. (Dorothy helps
him and the Scarecrow falls to the ground. He puts
back some straw into his coat that had dropped out.
Scarecrow rises, starts to whirl about.) Whhhooops!
Ha-ha -- there goes some of me again!

Dorothy: Oh -- does it hurt you?

Scarecrow: Oh, no -- My, it's good to be.... (Dorothy screams as

the Scarecrow whirls about and falls over -- she rushes
to him)…
him) free.

Dorothy: Oh! Oh! Ohhh!

Scarecrow: Did I scare you?

Dorothy: No, No -- I -- I just thought you hurt yourself.

Scarecrow: I didn't think so. You see, I can't even scare a bird!
I'm a failure, because I haven't got a brain.

Dorothy: Well, what would you do with a brain if you had one?

Scarecrow: Do? Why, if I had a brain, I could (Dances)

I could spend all my hours,

10
Talking with the flowers,
Talking with the rain.
If I only had a brain.

Dorothy: Wonderful! Why, if our Scarecrow back in

_________ could do that, the birds would be scared
to pieces!

Scarecrow: Where's ________?

Dorothy: That's where I live. And I want to get back there so

badly I'm going all the way to Emerald City to get the
Wizard of Oz to help me.

Scarecrow: Do you think if I went with you this Wizard

would give me some brains?

Dorothy: I don’t know. But why not try? Oh maybe you'd better
not. I've got a witch mad at me.

Scarecrow: Witch? Huh! I'm not afraid of a witch!

I'm not afraid of anything --- except a
lighted match.

Dorothy: I don't blame you for that.

Scarecrow: Will you take me with you?

Dorothy: Why, of course I will!

Scarecrow: Hooray! We're off to see a Wizard!

Dorothy: To Oz?

Scarecrow: To Oz!

Both: We're off to see the Wizard

takes the apple back and slaps Dorothy's hand)
Ouch!

First Tree: What do you think you're doing?

Dorothy: We've been walking a long ways and I was hungry and
-- Did you say....

Second Tree: (Talking audience) How would you like to have

someone come along and pick something off of you?

Dorothy: Oh, dear -- I keep forgetting I'm not in __________!

Scarecrow: (Whispers to Dorothy) I'll show you how to get apples.

(The Scarecrow tickles the trees. The apples fall to the
ground.)

Scarecrow: Hooray! I guess that did it! Help yourself.

Dorothy: (Walks over to get the apples. She sees a tin foot
and examines it)
it Why, it's a man! A man made out of
tin!

Scarecrow: What?

Dorothy: Yes. Oh -- look --

Tin Man: Oil can.....Oil can....

Scarecrow: Oil can what?

12
Dorothy: Oil can? Oh -- oh, here it is! (Scarecrow and Dorothy
examine the Tin Man -- he tries to speak) Where do
you want to be oiled first?

Tin man: My mouth -- my mouth!

Dorothy: Here -- here --

Tin Man: (The Tin Man tries to speak

Dorothy: Oh... (Dorothy lowers the right arm of the Tin Man so
that it hangs naturally -- Scarecrow busy with the
oilcan)...Oh, did that hurt?

Tin man: No -- it feels wonderful. About a year ago I was

chopping that tree minding my own business -- when
suddenly it started to rain.... (Scarecrow and Dorothy
listen to the Tin Man he grows weak as they work his
arms back and forth Scarecrow oils his neck for him)
...and right in the middle of a chop, I could not move.

Dorothy: Well, you're perfect now.

Tin Man: Perfect? Oh bang on my chest if you think I'm perfect.

Go ahead -- bang on it!

Dorothy: (Bangs on his chest) Oh --!

Scarecrow: Beautiful! What an echo!

Tin Man: It's empty. I don’t have a heart!

13
Both: No heart?

Scarecrow: What would you do if you had a heart?

Tin Man: (Tin

Tin Man dances) I'd be tender -- I'd be gentle
And awful sentimental
Regarding Love and Art
If I only had a heart!

Scarecrow: Do you think the Wizard of oz would give him a heart?

Dorothy: Sure! Would you like to come to Emerald City with us?

Tin Man: Emerald City? Why, that's a long and dangerous trip.
(Witch laughs off-
off-stage) Oh -- what's that? Oh –

Witch: Forgotten about me huh? (Tin Man, Dorothy and

the
Scarecrow react as th e Witch speaks) Well, I haven't
forgotten about you! Helping the little lady along, are
you, gentlemen? Well, stay away from her! And as for
you, my pretty little...Dorothy, I wish (Dorothy hugs
TOTO) you luck with the Wizard of Oz. And a happy
journey back to _________! (Laughs and exits)

Scarecrow: I'm not afraid of her. I'll see you get safely to the
Wizard now, whether I get a brain or not!

Tin Man: I'll help you too, whether or not I get a heart.

Dorothy: You are the best friends anybody ever had.

Tin Man: Well then we are off to see the Wizard.

All: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

SCENE 5

14
Tin Man: I don't like this forest! It's -- it's dark and creepy!

DORO
Dorothy: Do -- do you suppose we'll meet any wild
animals?

Tin Man: We might.

Scarecrow: Animals that -- that eat straw?

Tin Man: Some -- but mostly lions, and tigers, and

bears.

Dorothy: Lions?

Scarecrow: And tigers?

Tin Man: And bears.

Dorothy: Oh! Lions and tigers and bears! Oh, my!

All: (Beginning to chant) Lions and tigers and bears!

Dorothy: Oh, my!

All: Lions and tigers and bears!

Dorothy: Oh, my!

All: Lions and tigers and bears!

Dorothy: Oh, my! (Screams as the Lion appears)

Lion: Put 'em up! Put 'em up! Which one of you first? I'll
fight you both! I'll fight you with one paw tied behind

15
my back. I'll fight you standing on one foot. I'll fight
you with my eyes closed.

Tin Man: Go away and let us alone!

Lion: Oh, scared, huh? Afraid, huh? Come on -- get up and

fight! Put your hands up, you bag of hay!

Scarecrow: (Down on the ground) Now that's getting personal,

Lion.

Tin Man: Yes -- get up and teach him a lesson.

Scarecrow: What about you? Why don’t you fight him?

Tin Man: Well -- well --, I hardly know him. (The Lion growls at
TOTO)

Lion: Well, I'll get you, anyway, Pee-Wee. (Dorothy slaps his
cheek. He Backs away crying.)

Dorothy: Shame on you!

Lion: What -- what did you do that for? I didn't bite him.

Dorothy: No, but you tried to. You should not fight poor little
dogs. (TOTO whimpers, Scarecrow and Tin Man mimic
his whimpers.)

Lion: Well, you didn't have to go and hit me, did you? Is my
nose bleeding?

Dorothy: Well, of course not. Why, you're nothing but a great

big coward!

16
Lion: You're right -- I am a coward. I haven't any courage at
all. I even scare myself. Look at the circles under my
eyes. I haven't slept in weeks.

Tin Man: Why don't you try counting sheep?

Lion: That doesn't do any good -- I'm afraid of 'em.

Scarecrow: Oh, that's too bad. You are supposed to be the king
of the Forest! Don't you think the Wizard could help
him, too?

Dorothy: I don't see why not. Why don't you come along with
us? We're on our way to see the Wizard now. I'm sure
he could give you some courage.

Lion: (Chorus
(Chorus provides music as Lion Dances)
Yes, courage would be the best.
I could groooowl in my house--
Be a lion and not a mouse --
If I courage like the rest!

instead of later! Hah! When I have those ruby slippers,
my power will be the greatest in Oz! And now…
something with poison in it… with poison in it, but

beautiful and soothing to the smell! (laughs) Flowers!
Poppies! Poppies! (The Witch exits, others enter.)

Dorothy: Oh look they are beautiful! Oh my goodness, I

suddenly feel so sleepy… (Falls
(Falls asleep)

Lion: I think I will take a little nap.

Tin Man: Oh No, the Lion is falling asleep too! You take Dorothy
and I’ll take TOTO. (Falls asleep)

Dorothy: (Crosses to the Tin Man) Look! He's rusted again. Oh,
give me the oil can quick! Oh-oh, quick! We'll oil him
up.

Witch: Curse it! Curse it! Somebody always helps that girl!
But shoes or no shoes, I'm still great enough to beat
her. And evil to those who try to stop me!

Dorothy: Come on, let's get out of here! Look, Emerald City is
closer and prettier than ever!

18

All: What sign?

Doorman: It's on the door! It, Oh (The doorman realizes there is

no sign and hangs a sign on door, then exits. Dorothy
and others read the sign.)

All: "Bell out of order. Please knock." (They Knock)

Doorman: Thank you! Now, what do you want?

All: We want to see the Wizard.

Doorman: Ooooh! The Wizard? But nobody can see the Great Oz!
Even I've never seen him!

Dorothy: ...sir. I've got to see the Wizard! The Good Witch of the
North sent me!

Doorman: Prove it.

Scarecrow: She's wearing the ruby slippers she gave her.

Doorman: ...so she is! Why didn't you say that that! Come on in!

19
Just walk that way. (He is nervous and scared) I’ve got
to go!

Lion: Wait a minute, fellahs. I was just thinkin'. I really don't

want to see the Wizard. I will wait for you outside.

Scarecrow: What's the matter?

Tin Man: Oh, he's just scared again.

Dorothy: Don’t you want to ask for courage?

Lion: I am be too scared to ask for it. OH!!! (The lion pulls

Tin Man: B-B-B-But if we do that, we'll have to kill her to get it!

Oz’s Voice: Bring me her broomstick, and I'll do what you ask.
Now, go!

Lion: But -- but what if she kills us first?

Oz’s Voice: I...said, -Go!

SCENE 8

Scarecrow: (TOTO barks) Sssh -- Toto -- be quiet! Look at those

guards. Hey I’ve got a plan! (He whispers to the rest.

Dorothy: Please, sir. We've done what you told us. We've
brought you the broomstick of the Wicked Witch.

Oz’s Voice: Oh...you killed her, eh? Very resourceful!

Dorothy: Yes, sir. So we'd like you to keep your word.

Oz’s Voice: I'll have to give the matter a little thought. Go away
and come back tomorrow!

Dorothy: Tomorrow? If you were really great, you'd keep your

bad Wizard.

Scarecrow: You'd better be good enough to send Dorothy

back to__________!

Wizard: Well I don’t know…

Scarecrow: What about us?

Wizard: Yes, Just a moment. (grabs a bag) Anybody can have a

brain, Scarecrow. In Universities people have only one
thing you don’t! (The Wizard reaches into his bag and
pulls out a diploma.) A diploma!

Scarecrow: E=MC 2!

Wizard: As for you, my fine Lion, you think that you have no
courage. But courage is inside you my friend. What
you need is this…(The
(The Wizard leans forward puts the
medal around the lion’s neck and kisses the Lion) A
medal!

Lion: Oh -- Oh -- I'm speechless!

Wizard: And you, my friend, want a heart! You don't know how
lucky you are not to have one.

Tin Man: But I still want one.

Wizard: Yes! (Wizard reaches into his bag and pulls out a heart.
He gives it to the Tin man)

Scarecrow: What about Dorothy?

Tin Man: Yes -- how about Dorothy?

24
Lion: Yeah.

Dorothy: Oh, I don't think there's anything in that bag for me.

Wizard: Well, let me see… (The Wizard looks through his bag)

Dorothy: Oh, now I'll never get home!

Lion: Stay with us, then, Dorothy. We all love you. We don't
want you to go.

Dorothy: Oh, that's very kind of you -- but this could never be
like _________. Oh, Scarecrow, what am I going to do?

Scarecrow: Look -- here's someone who can help you! (Suddenly

Glinda appears in the scene.)

Dorothy: Oh, will you help me? Can you help me?

Glinda: You don't need to be helped any longer. You've always

had the power to go back to __________.

Dorothy: I have?

Glinda: It’s your magic slippers. They will take you

home in two seconds!

Dorothy: Oh…Toto, too?

Glinda: Toto, too.

Dorothy: Oh, dear -- that's too wonderful to be true! Oh, it's --

it's going to be so hard to say goodbye. I love you all.
Goodbye, Tin Man. Oh, don't cry. You'll rust. Here --
here's your oil can. Goodbye.

Tin Man: Now I know I've got a heart -- 'cause it's breaking.

25
Dorothy: Oh -- Goodbye, Lion. I'm going to miss your crying.
I think I'll miss you most of all. (Hugs Scarecrow)

Glinda: Are you ready now?

Dorothy: Yes. Say goodbye, Toto. Yes, I'm ready now.

Glinda: Then close your eyes, and tap your heels together
three times. And think to yourself -- "There's no place
like home; there's no place like home; there's no place
like home."

Dorothy: There's no place like home. There's no place like

home. There's no place like home. There's no place
like home. There's no place like...home. There's no
place...like home. There's no place like home. (As
Dorothy clicks her heels… the tornado comes back. It
carries her home.)

We’re home TOTO we’re really home!
