Answer the following question:

1. The strain induced in an MS bar of rectangular section having width equal to twice the
depth is 2.5 x 10-5. The bar is subjected to a tensile of 4 KN. Find the section
dimensions of the bar. Take E = 0.2 x 106 N/mm2.
2. State Hooke’s law.
3. The Young’s modulus and the shear modulus of material are 120 GPa and 45 GPa
respectively. What is its Bulk modulus?
4. what do you understand by the term ‘Point of Contraflexure’?
5. Draw a shear force diagram for a beam of span 4m carrying a point load of 50 KN
over the length of 2m from the fixed end and 30KN at the free end.

PART-B MARKS: 4 X 10 = 40
Answer any four for the following question:
1. An alloy circular bar ABCD 3m long is subjected to a tensile force of 50KN as shown
in figure. If the stress in the middle portion BC is not to exceed 150 MPa, then what
should be its diameter? Also find the length of middle portion, if the total extension of the
bar should not exceed by 3mm. Take E = 100 GPa.

2. A mild steel of 20mm diameter and 300mm long is enclosed centrally inside a hollow
copper tube of external diameter 30mm and internal diameter of 25mm. The ends of
the tube and rod are brazed together and composite bar is subjected to an axial pull of
40 KN. If E for steel and copper is 200 GN/m2 and 100 GN/m2 respectively, find the
stress developed in the rod and tube. Also find the extension of the rod.

3. A beam of length 10 m is simply supported at its ends carries two concentrated loads
of 5 KN each at a distance of 3 m and 7 m from the left support and also a uniformly
distributed load of 1 kN/m between the points loads. Draw the shear force and
bending moment diagrams. Calculate the maximum bending moment.

4. A beam of 5 m length is hinged at one end and freely supported at a distance of 3.5m
from the hinge. It carries a UDL of 2.5 kN/m between hinged end and support and a
point load of 9 kN at the free end. Construct the SF and BM diagrams. Find the
maximum bending moment and location of point of contra flexure.

5.A rectangular cross-section 50 mm wide and 150 mm deep is used as

cantilever 6 m long and subjected to a UDL of 2 kN/m over the entire
length. Determine the bending stress at 50 mm from the top of the fibre, at
the mid-span of the beam. Also, calculate the maximum bending stress.
