Yard Issues:
Staff is looking for more support for A.M. recess. Currently, they are quite understaffed to meet
this goal. Teachers aren’t getting prep or bathroom breaks because there aren’t enough people
on duty to reach the goal of at least 5 adults on the yard for the 9:30-10:30 recess. The general
feeling is that the atmosphere on the yard is challenging to manage and that a renewed
approach and focus of energy would be helpful.

Goals for increased staffing would be:

-Maintain a minimum yard staff of 5 adults during morning recess.

-Focus more on “activity time” vs. free-for-all play time. The presence of more adults
would allow for the stated goal of eliminating chasing and play-fighting games and focus
energy on games/activities managed by adults.

-Develop training curriculum for paid yard staff. All yard attendants should be employing
the same methods and should be familiar with a cohesive overall yard supervision
strategy.

-Develop a simple one page orientation for any volunteer parents who participate in
yard supervision. This should summarize the general approach to yard monitoring and
include some key specifics. This page should be made available to every parent who
volunteers on the yard at LeConte.

Resolutions:

-Denise will got to PTA volunteer coordinator to ask for yard help.

-Cheryl will return to SGC with request to reallocate funds toward this effort.

-Someone will develop a training curriculum for new yard support.

-Someone will develop a simple orientation sheet for parent yard volunteers.

Data:
SGC reviewed last year’s testing data. Most striking trend is a positive movement in
mathematics. Dana Blanchard suggests that the Everyday Math curriculum is effective.

General wide ranging discussion ensued.

No conclusions drawn or resolutions made.
