CHAPTER 2

DISCUSSION

2.1 Indonesian habits or ethics when they meet unknown or new people

at the first time

There are some unique habits that are commonly found in Indonesia,

especially when the inhabitants of Indonesia meet unknown or new people

at the first time, such as:

1. The citizens of Indonesia are mostly friendly and they always pretend to

know, as they’ve known each other to every new people that they’ve

ever met at the first time;

2. Indonesia is also considered to be a relaxed and informal society. When

greeting others in most situations, every people say “hello” or “hi”. It’s

almost similar with most of European habits, but Indonesian people will

not say “nice to meet you” or “how do you do” after greeting new people

they meet.

3. In more formal and informal situations they usually shake hands at the

first time they meet, and most of them will put it on their chest to show

some respects. But these habits are unusual in some other countries in the

world. Even it becomes strange and unacceptable habit.

4. After shaking hands they also usually mention their name or nickname,

and a nickname is usually used among friends and also it’s a sign of

acceptance and friendship. First name is used frequently in Indonesia

than in some other counties. Place of birth, address and occupation are

commonly asked when they meet new people.

5. Sometimes they will offer their new friend something, such as cigarettes,

candies and various other things.

6. In the other side, they’re easy to know and also easy to forget the name

of new people they meet.

2.2 Indonesian habits when they visit their friends’ houses

Most of the inhabitants of Indonesia have different habits with

European when they visit their friends’ houses. It’s completely difference

with Britain’s, American and also Australian. They always make a call and

sometimes bring a gift to the host. When somebody visits one house

without permission they could refuse to accept the guest. In Indonesia, it’s

possible to visit our friend’s house without a call and permission from the

very beginning. And they also don’t know the right moment to visit their

friend’s house. Even they don’t have any idea about what kind of gifts that

they have to give to the host. In this case our people can be classified as
citizens who have impolite habits than other countries who pay good

attention about their habits.

2.3 Indonesian table manners habits

Indonesian people don’t pay a lot of attention to good table manners.

Even most of the inhabitants are sophisticated when they’ve to eat with

knife and fork. Just only certain people or a professional, and in certain

situation they’ve to pay a lot of attention about things that they’ve to do

when having table manners, but the table manners are mostly adopted from

American table manners standard. However, it’s still mixed up with

Indonesian table manners customs. There are some Indonesian table

manners habits, such as:

1. They’re all having their seats together. It’s the opposite of American or

Britain’s table manners habits that they’ve to let the ladies first to have

their seats.

2. In more formal situation they start eating after everyone has been served

by the host or until the host starts eating to show consideration.

3. For informal situation, sometimes they’ve their left elbow on the table

while they’re eating by using their right hand (without fork, spoon and
knife), and also they pick food out of their teeth with fingernails after

eating.

4. For some peoples burp in public after eating or drinking is impolite

manner.

5. When they’ve finished eating they will let the fork and the spoon
together, the fork with the tines curved.

2.4 Indonesian toilet and bathroom habits (private and public toilets

and bathrooms)

Kind of toilets that we’re generally found in Indonesia are wet

toilets, and even in public places there’re hardly any dry toilets. It doesn’t

like in public toilets, they don’t need to stand in line whenever they’re

going to use their private toilets. It’s usually completed with bath-tub and a

pale to water the porcelain throne, and the room is also completed with a

large of mirror because most of the citizens in Indonesia generally pay a lot

of attention about their appearance. They don’t do any activities when

they’re on the porcelain throne. It distinguishes their habits with some other

countries such as America, England and Australia.

Public toilets are usually completed with standard facilities such as

bath-tub and the other facilities to keep that place are still clean and public

bathrooms in Indonesia also have the same facilities. Beside do stand in

line, most of people generally use this place every day in a certain time and
we should have to manage our time as short as possible we can. Make sure

that you don’t leave something of any kind after using the toilet. It’s

possible to have short conversation when they meet their business relation

in the toilet and also make sure the tap is off to restrict the water and take

the porcelain throne to the very begin position or restore it after using the

toilet.

2.5 Indonesian habits in the bedroom

There are some people who read a book, magazine or news paper

before getting a sleep. Most of them do uncover their bed. It’s caused

Indonesia has tropical season, and they only use gloves during a sleep. The

children around five years old and younger still have a sleep together with

their parents. Boys and girls around 12 to 15 and older have different

bedroom.

2.6 Indonesian habits when having or receiving social invitations

There are some unusual habits in Indonesia than European habits

when they attend social invitations; they always bring a mount of money as

their prize to the host. Sometimes, it’s possible if they want to attend the

party early and help the host to prepare the menus without confirmation at

first. Most of them have bad habits when they have to attend a party such
as, they could not be on time, and also it’s acceptable however we attend

the party as unexpected guest.

2.7 Indonesian hugging or holding hands habits

In Indonesia, holding hands or hugging is normal habit. Women

sometimes do holding hands to each other, but men always considered this

as strange habit. In the other side, men will do holding hands or hugging

when they meet their old friends. Holding hands between a boy and a girl -

Are possible and it’s also indicate that they have a special relationship each

other.

2.8 Habits or ethics in school’s and university’s environment

In school’s and university’s environment we’ve different habits or

ethics than some other countries. Our students are always not be on time to

join class. When they are waiting for their lecture, they sometimes make a

group to discuss something. They always feel sleepy when the lecture

explains about his or her subject in front of the class. Even they are really

happy when the lecture could not attend the class and they don’t realize that

they have bad advantages of it.

2.9 Indonesian time habits

“Could not be on time” is familiar in our sense of hearings. It has

become popular habit in Indonesia, and most of us considered this habit as a

usual thing that we’ve to keep in our mind as a bad habit.

2.10 Indonesian habits in public places (to stand in line, spiting, pass

wind and to pass urine)

Most of people in Indonesia are impatient when they have to keep

waiting in a certain time, especially in public places such as, in the toilet, in

the gate, in the bus station, on the road and in some other public places. In

their assumption, to be the number one is lucky, however they have to

disturb the line. In this case, we could say that “Indonesian really hate the

line”.

The other habits that we are usually found in public places in

Indonesia are our people will spit and blow their noise up, pass wind and to

pass their urine anywhere and anytime they could. They don’t care about

the other people who are disgusted by their habits and also they’ve never

felt guilty about what they’ve done in public places.
