FERMENTATION

A. PURPOSE
- to observe the fermentation proccess
- to prove than fermentation produces CO2

B. BASIC THEORY
In a general sense, fermentation is the conversion of a carbohydrate such as sugar
into an acid or an alcohol. More specifically, fermentation can refer to the use of yeast
to change sugar into alcohol, energy, and CO2

C. TOOL AND MATERIALS

- 2 bottles - 1 balance
- plastisin - 500 cc filtered water
- thermometer - 1 straw
- 100 gr glucose - 5 cc PP
- 1 sachet yeast - 2 chemical glass 250 cc

D. PROCEDURES
1. Dissolve 10 gr of glucose in 50 cc water in flask A and put 2 gr of yeast in the
solution
2. Fill the flask B with lime water which has been dropped by 3 drops of PP
3. Fill the first bottle with yeast solution and the second bottle with lime water that has
been dropped by PP. Measure each of solution's temperature.
4. Link the two bottles with balance on the caps.
5. Put the thermometer into bottle with yeast solution in it through the bottle's cap.
Watch the temperature's changed!
E. EXPERIMENT RESULT

Experiment Tool Condition Before Condition After

Treatment 20 minutes
Tube A
Temperature 27o 30o
Smell Adonan ragi Busuk, kecut
Colour Putih keruh Keruh coklat
Tube B
Temperature 26o 29o
Smell Seperti alkohol Seperti kecap
Colour Pink Lebih bening

F. CONCLUSION
From the experiment we did, we can conclude that fermentation proccess produces
alcohol, energy, and CO2. It can be proven by the condition of lime water + PP solution
after 20 minutes treatment.

G. QUESTIONS
1. In the end of experiment 1 and 2 what happened with the lime water which has
been dropped by PP? Explain your answer!
- The lime water got clearer, that's because the solution got CO 2 from the yeast
fermentation proccess that makes the lime water clearer.
2. What is the function of PP in the experiment?
- PP is given to lime water just as a mark to prove that lime water will get clearer
by seeing the color of PP slowly disappear.
3. Based on your experiment result what substances which form and write the
reaction!
