C. PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

The Present Perfect Tense expresses the idea that something happened (or never happened)
before now, at an unspecified time in the past. The exact time it happened is not important. If
there is a specific mention of time, the simple past tense is used. I saw that movie last night.
Examples:
They have moved into a new apartment.
Have you ever visited Bali Island?
I have already seen that movie.
I have never seen snow in Jakarta.

The Present Perfect Tense also expresses the repetition of an activity before now. The exact
time of each repetition is not important.
Examples:
We have had four tests so far this semester.
I have written my wife a letter every other day for the last two weeks.
I have met many people since I came here in June.
I have flown on an airplane many times.

The Present Perfect Tense also, when used with for (selama) or since (sejak), expresses a
situation that began in the past and continues to the present. (for + duration of time; since +
a particular time).
Examples:
She has been here since seven o’clock.
Johan has been here for two weeks.
My father has had this same pair of shoes for three years.
Susy has liked cowboy movies since she was a child.
He has known the man for many years.

Note:
The expression have got is common in very informal spoken English. It has the same
meaning as have.
Examples:
I have got a cold. has the same meaning as I have a cold.
I have got a new car. has the same meaning as I have a new car.

The meaning of have got is present. It has no past form. Have got is not present prefect.
Compare:
I have got three letters so far this week (present prefect meaning).
I have got a problem (present meaning).

Forms:
(They, We, I, You) + Have + Verb-3
(He, She, It) + Has + Verb-3
