The Jewish Federation Should Stop Funding
Groups That Vilify Israel
The Federation funds Theater J through a $600,000 subsidy to the DCJCC.
Last year, Theater J staged ‘Seven Jewish Children‐A Play for Gaza.” Jeffrey
Goldberg of The Atlantic called the play “anti‐Jewish…mainstreaming the
worst anti‐Jewish stereotypes…that Jews glory in the shedding of non‐
Jewish blood.
This January, in its Voices from a Changing Middle East Festival, Theater J
staged “Return to Haifa,” based on the novella of Ghassan Kanafani, a PFLP
terrorist leader involved in planning the 1972 Ben Gurion Airport massacre,
killing 26 and wounding 80. Fabricating history, the play uses a symbolic
family to represent Shoah survivors fleeing to Israel where they rob Arabs
of both their property and children.
After each “Return to Haifa” performance, Theater J organized political
discussions largely comprised of representatives of organizations critical of
Israel and gave a platform to some groups supporting the international
“boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS)” movement against Israel. J
Street, a political organization strongly critical of Israel, was on several
panels.
Federation funds should not support groups that demonize, delegitimize
and apply double standards in their criticism of Israel nor those wanting the
US government or the UN to coerce Israel.
The Federation needs to adopt guidelines banning the use of Jewish charity
to denigrate the Jewish people or their national homeland.
The Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco has just done so. The
Jewish Federation of Greater Washington should do the same.
Join the campaign to prevail upon The Federation to adopt explicit funding
guidelines.
