Weed & Seed Program Hosts Crime Prevention Training
February 3, 2011

The Jacksonville Weed and Seed Program will be hosting a training event to reduce crime and enhance
the quality of life in our community in a whole new way through the use of CPTED, (Crime Prevention
through Environmental Design). The two-day training program will be held February 23-24, 2011 from
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Jacksonville Youth Center, 804 New Bridge Street.

“The goal of CPTED is to prevent crime through the design of a physical environment that positively
influences human behavior,” said Chief Mike Yaniero. CPTED principals have proven to be successful in
eradicating drug problems, vandalism, violent attacks and other crimes in many Weed and Seed sites
throughout the country.

“This training, led by experts from the National Crime Prevention Council, will help the New River-Davis
Street Corridor Weed and Seed site “design out” problem areas and address challenges created by
abandoned homes and foreclosed properties through training and technical assistance,” stated Carmella
Fulcher, City of Jacksonville’s Weed & Seed Site Coordinator.

The free training is open to the general public, who can register by calling 910-938-6551. A flyer about
the program is attached. For additional information about Weed and Seed, visit our website at;
