Distribution of film has traditionally bee n done by big, often global com panies, It¶s the
process of releasing and films in the market place and keeping them there. In
Hollywood the three stages of getting a film to an audience - production, distribution
and exhibition ± have often been part of a company which is 'vertically integrated', with
all the stages under the control of one company. In the UK, distribution is more about
µmarketing and sustaining a global product in local markets ¶.

In the past this has been all about getting 35mm prints to cinem as. It¶s also been about
big budget films. With new digital film production digital distribution is becoming more
common because its far more cost effective than distributing 35mm prints ± now the
distributor just has to send computer files to cinemas. This also means that the runs in
cinema may be shorter as the films can then easily be given a second run or smaller
cinemas followed by going onto DVD quicker than in the past, or being sold as
downloads, which is a relatively new but fast growing method of distribution. In fact the
opening in cinemas is often used almost part of the marketing campaign for the release
of the film on DVD. As the Film Distributors¶ Association website says
(http://www.launchingfilms.tv/distribution.php ):

Digital production has also allowed for a huge development in user -generated films,
ranging from the sort of films presented on Openfilm.com, who claim that by showing
member¶s films on Tivo, Boxee, µOur partnerships with third -party platforms deliver your
films directly to the televisions in more than 11 million living rooms¶

„y film is not a big budget , high profile production. It was made on a very limited
budget with no big name stars and falls into a completely different but growing band of
user-generated material which is uploaded to sites like YouTube, and Vimeo.
Wikipedia identifies all these sites for user generated sharing

In fact my opening sequence has been uploaded to YouTube where it has currently
had 27 views! It was then embedded in my Blogger blog and Facebook. After that
stage it may be viewed on computers, smartphones, ipods etc and further embedded
in other people¶s blogs!
