Adjectives

An adjective is used to describe a noun. A noun is a person, place, or thing.

An ADJECTIVE gives us more details and information about an object.

Number, color, order, and size, words are frequently used as ADJECTIVES.

Example: Two pencils Orange cat First step Gigantic T.V.

Finding the Adjective: Underline the adjective in each sentence.

1. The black cat jumped from the high wall.


2. The ugly patterned carpet was now faded and worn.
3. The sparkling diamond ring looked beautiful on her slim finger.
4. She had two cows, several pigs and some chickens.
5. Paula left her old bicycle in their garden shed.

Adjectives: Underline the adjective in each sentence. Then, write what word the adjective is
describing.

An adjective is also used to compare and evaluate nouns. These are called comparative
adjectives and superlative adjectives.

A comparative adjective compares two nouns.


To make an adjective comparative:
If the word is 1 or two syllables you will add –er at the end of the word.

Example: Fast Faster


Good Better
Bad Worse
If the word is 3 or more syllables you add more before the word.

Example: Intelligent More intelligent


Compassionate More compassionate

Comparative Adjectives: Underline the comparative adjectives in each sentence.

A superlative adjective evaluates three or more nouns.


To make an adjective superlative:
If the word is 1 or two syllables you will add –est at the end of the word.

If the word is 3 or more syllables you add most before the word.
