First aid in the laboratory

Accident First aid


Scalded by hot water • Wash the affected part with plenty of
water, but do not rub the affected part.
• Apply ointment for scalding or leave the
part exposed to air

Scalded by acids or alkalis • Wash the affected part with plenty of


water.
• If scalded by an acid, wash with a 1%
solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate.
• If scalded by an alkali, wash with a 1%
solution of acetic acid (vinegar).
• Dry the affected part and cover it with
gauze bandage.

Cut or wound • Press a piece of gauze on the cut or


wound to stop bleeding. (Make sure
there are no glass pieces in the wound.)
• If the cut or wound is slight, dap it with
antiseptic and bandage it.

Chemical substance in the mouth • Spit the chemical substance out at once.
• Wash the mouth with plenty of water.
• If necessary, send the patient to hospital.

Chemical substance in the eye • Wash the eye with plenty of water.
• Apply eye lotion to the eye.
• If necessary, send the patient to hospital

Electric shock • Switch off the current at once.


• Do not touch the patient if the current is
on.
• Using a long wooden stick or any
suitable insulator, push the patient from
the live wire
• Apply artificial respiration to the patient.
• Get help and send the patient to hospital

Steps for avoiding a fire in the laboratory

• Put out any lighted match or wooden splinter before throwing it into a
waste-paper basket.

• Do not use a piece of paper to light a Bunsen burner.

• Turn off the Bunsen burner after using it.

• Light the match or wooden splinter before turning on the gas of the
Bunsen burner.

• Check the rubber hose of the burner frequently to ensure it is not leaking
any gas.

• Switch off all electrical appliances after using them.

• Keep chemical substances or anything which burns easily away from a


fire, e.g. alcohol.

• Make sure you know how to use the fire extinguisher in the laboratory in
case of fire.
