WHAT IS HONOUR KILLING

 An honor killing or honour killing (see


spelling differences, also called a
customary killing) is the murder of a
family or clan member by one or more
fellow family members, where the
murderers (and potentially the wider
community) believe the victim to have
brought dishonor upon the family .
A Middle Eastern and South
Asian cultural practice whereby
murder, usually of a female
family member, is committed by
male family members in response
to a perceived slight upon the
so-called honour of the family,
with the intent of defending
that family honour
REASONS CITED FOR HONOUR KILLINGS

 Suspicions of infidelity
 Promiscuity
 Flirting
 Desire for divorce
 Marrying someone of their own
choice.
 Dressing in a manner unacceptable to
the family or community.
MISCONCEPTION

 On October 24, 2002, at the 57th


Session of the United Nations General
Assembly Third Committee, the UN
resolution, "Working Towards the
Elimination of Crimes Committed in
the Name of Honor" was passed.

 The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)


estimates that the annual world-wide number
of “honour killing” victims may be as high as
5000 women
HONOUR KILLINGS A GLOBAL
PROBLEM.
According to a 2002 report by the UN Special Reporter
on Violence against Women, “honour killings” take
place in Pakistan, Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Egypt,
Lebanon, Iran, Yemen, Morocco and other
Mediterranean and Gulf countries. It also occurs in
countries such as Germany, France and the United
Kingdom within immigrant communities. It is not only
in Islamic countries or communities that this act of
violence is prevalent. Brazil is cited as a case in point,
where killing is justified to defend the honour of the
husband in the case of a wife’s adultery
More than 1,000 young
people in India have been
done to death every year
owing to 'Honour Killings'  in
INDIA two legal experts have
claimed.

Chandigarh-based legal
experts Anil Malhotra and
his brother Ranjit Malhotra
have said that in traditional
societies, honour killings are
basically 'justified' as a
sanction for 'dishonourable'
behaviour.
