Charging Phenomenon:
The charging control circuit of a GSM handset is shown in figure 1. The input voltage from the charger is
given to the pins A2, A3, A4, and A5 of the charging IC through a fuse. The fuse is used to limit the
current flowing into the charging circuit. The voltage is transferred to the charging control (CCONT) IC.
This IC then gets the instructions from the Energy Management (EM) software to generate appropriate
PWM signal according to the current status of charge on the battery. The pins C6 and D6 are used to cut
the power supply to the battery when charging is complete. When the battery is completely charged,
the PWM generated by the CCONT IC is zero, and the pins C6 and D6 of the charging IC stop the supply
to the battery.
Connections of Battery with the Mobile station:
Figure 2 shows the connections of a battery with the mobile station.

Min Max
1. Battery voltage (V) 3.1 5.2
2. Battery temperature (V) 0 2.85
3. Battery size indicator – BSI (V) 0 1.4
4. Gnd (V) 0 0
Observations: (On the trainer)
a) Battery voltage at TP 29. 6V

Battery voltage at TP 29 0V (Pin-3 of switch 2 turned off)

b) Pin-1 of switch 2 turned off and charging switched on.

Voltage at TP 29 1.4V
Voltage at TP 30 4.9V
Voltage at TP 31 0V

Conclusion:
In this experiment we observed that during the battery charging process its voltages varies which shows
the charging status of battery.
