Public-Private Partnerships to Boost Local Land Conservation

57 Land Trusts and Communities Across New York State to Benefit

An important investment in New York’s land trusts will be announced at 11:00 am on Monday, March
14th by the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Land Trust Alliance.

Land Trust Alliance president Rand Wentworth, state agency representatives, and land trust leaders
will announce 75 matching grants totaling $1.4 million. The Conservation Partnership Program is
supported by appropriations from the state Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) and administered by
the Land Trust Alliance in coordination with DEC.

Since 2002, the Conservation Partnership Program has provided competitive grants for more than 350
projects to 75 different land trusts across the state. These nonprofit organizations serve rural,
suburban, and urban constituencies in nearly every county; this year’s funding will go to 57 land
trusts, including seven first-time grantees.

To date, the program has leveraged over $12 million in additional funding, helping private landowners
and local communities permanently conserve more than 15,000 acres of farmland, working forest,
wildlife habitat, recreation areas, and urban open space. Many funded projects are targeting areas and
resources prioritized in New York State’s Open Space Plan.
