Term Definition
Treaty of Versailles Treaty which ended World War I that included large reparations from Germany,
the formation of the League of Nations, and the mandate system.
Archduke Francis Heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne who was assassinated in Serbia; his
Ferdinand assassination was the powder keg which started World War I.
Vladimir Lenin Founder of the Bolshevik party and eventual leader of the U.S.S.R.

as unavoidable.

Militarism The glorification and the process of maintaining a strong military organization in
preparation for conflict.
Diplomacy The process of conducting and maintaining relations between nations, by their
heads directly, or through representatives
Tsar Nicholas II The last Romanov emperor of Russia who will be overthrown during the Russian
Revolution.
Bolshevik Revolution Revolution where members of the Social Democratic party crated the communist
state which ultimately became the U.S.S.R.
Alliance systems An agreement or treaty between two parties to work together for a specific
purpose.
Nationalism Pride in one’s country.
Imperialism The process of spreading one’s empire to extend over foreign territories.
Ultimatum A set of final conditions that must be accepted to avoid severe consequences.

Conscription The compulsory call of civilians to military service; the draft.

Mobilization The act of assembling and preparing troops and equipment for war.

Propaganda The news and information intended to influence people’s feelings


about a cause.
League of Nations International cooperative organization established after World War I to prevent
future wars.
Mandate system System by which the victors of World War I like Great Britain and France were
given control over lands of Germany and the former Ottoman Empire to help
them ultimately achieve independence. Included lands which eventually became
Iraq, Transjordan, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon.
