The internet is an excellent tool
for students to use for fun and
education. However, we need to
be careful to only allowour chil-
dren to access sites that we know
to be safe for them to use. Be sure
to watch your children as they use
the internet. Bookmark sites that
you knowto be kid-friendly so
your students will be able to have
easy access to them. As in all
other areas of their life—keep
them safe!!

Sites
Fact Monster (www.factmonster.com) is a good online
tool for students to use. On the upper right hand side of
the screen you will find a search box that students can
use to search for a particular topic. Under the search
box, they have links for an almanac, a dictionary, an ency-
clopedia and a thesaurus.
When a student mouses over the boxes in light green on
the left hand side under the title banner, items relevant
to that topic appear in the box under the bottom right
hand corner of the light green area. This gives the stu-
dent easy access to a multitude of fun facts and activities.
KidZone (www.kidzone.ws) is a reference site where
students can find fun things by topic or by grade level. It
has crafts, printables and coloring pages. The search
feature for this site is located in the upper right hand
corner or the bottom of the web page.

Another resource site designed by a librarian is Cy-
brarian. It is designed for students in Grades 3—8.
It is designed to help with homework assignments,
science fair projects, research papers, etc. This site
does not have information on it but is strictly a site
that lists links to other web sites. The home page
has a sidebar that lists topics and a search box so the
student can type in a topic.

KidsClick! is a web search site designed for kids
by librarians– with kid-friendly results! It has a
feature not found on other sites: a search by
Dewey Decimal number! Searches can also be
made by category, alphabetical or digital media.
The search box is located at the top right under
the title banner. It also has an Advanced Search
