Carbon Monoxide Warnings

1.4 Carbon Monoxide Warnings

When operating fuel-generated equipment in enclosed areas, take the following precautions to
protect you and your employees against carbon monoxide exposure.

What is carbon monoxide?1

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. Although it has no
detectable odor, CO is often mixed with other gases that do have an odor; therefore, you can
inhale carbon monoxide right along with gases you can smell and not even know that CO is
present.
CO is a common industrial hazard resulting from the incomplete burning of natural gas and any
other material containing carbon such as gasoline, kerosene, oil, propane, coal, or wood. One of
the most common sources of exposure in the workplace is the internal combustion engine.

How does CO harm you?

Carbon monoxide is harmful when breathed because it displaces oxygen in the blood and
deprives the heart, brain, and other vital organs of oxygen. Large amounts of CO can overtake you
in minutes without warning—causing you to lose consciousness and suffocate.
Besides tightness across the chest, initial symptoms of CO poisoning may include headache,
fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness, or nausea. Sudden chest pain may occur in people with angina.
During prolonged or high exposures, symptoms may worsen and include vomiting, confusion,
and collapse in addition to loss of consciousness and muscle weakness. Symptoms vary widely
from person to person. CO poisoning may occur sooner in those most susceptible: young children,
elderly people, people with lung or heart disease, people at high altitudes, or those who already
have elevated CO blood levels such as smokers. CO poisoning poses a special risk to fetuses.
Acute poisoning may result in permanent damage to the parts of your body.

How can employers help prevent CO poisoning?

To reduce the chances of CO poisoning in your workplace:
• Install an effective ventilation system that will remove CO from work areas.
• Maintain equipment and appliances that can produce CO to ensure they are in good
working order, promote their safe operation, and reduce CO formation.
• Consider switching from gasoline-powered equipment to equipment powered by
electricity, batteries, or compressed air if it can be used safely.
• Prohibit the use of gasoline-powered engines or tools in poorly ventilated areas.
• Provide personal CO monitors with audible alarms if potential exposure to CO exists.
• Test air regularly in areas where CO may be present, including confined spaces.
• Install CO monitors with audible alarms.

1. Information in this section was adapted from the “OSHA Fact Sheet,” U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety
and Health Administration, 2002, http://www.osha.gov/OshDoc/data_General_Facts/carbonmonoxide-factsheet.pdf,
February 2007.

SuperFlow Technologies Group 1-5

Safety

• Use a full-face piece, pressure-demand, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) or a
combination full-face piece, pressure demand supplied-air respirator with auxiliary self-
contained air supply in areas with high CO concentrations (those immediately dangerous to
life and health atmospheres).
• Use respirators with appropriate canisters for short periods under certain circumstances
where CO levels are not exceedingly high.
• Educate workers about the sources and conditions that may result in CO poisoning as well
as the symptoms and control of CO exposure.
• In addition, if your employees are working in confined spaces where the presence of CO is
suspected, you must ensure that workers test for oxygen sufficiency before entering.

What can employees do to help prevent CO poisoning?

To reduce the chances of CO poisoning in the workplace, employees should:
• Report any situation to your employer that might cause CO to accumulate.
• Be alert to ventilation problems—especially in enclosed areas where gases of burning fuels
may be released.
• Report promptly complaints of dizziness, drowsiness, or nausea.
• Avoid overexertion if you suspect CO poisoning, and leave the contaminated area.
• Tell your doctor that you may have been exposed to CO if you get sick.
• Avoid the use of gas-powered engines, such as those in powered washers as well as heaters
and forklifts, while working in enclosed spaces.

What are the OSHA standards for CO exposure?

The OSHA PEL is 50 parts per million (ppm). OSHA standards prohibit worker exposure to more
than 50 parts of the gas per million parts of air averaged during an 8-hour time period.

For more information on carbon monoxide, visit the OSHA Web site at http://www.osha.gov.

Introduction

2.1 Introduction
The TranX 2000™ is an effective and flexible tool for servicing automatic transmissions. The
portable unit can be used in the vehicle or on the bench. The TranX was designed with a
microprocessor that can hold information to drive and analyze all transmission types. As new
transmissions are released into the market, the TranX design lets you make simple periodic
upgrades with a single plug-in device that can quickly replaced by accessing the back of the TranX
2000 controller.
Please take a moment to register your TranX 2000 so we can notify you as updates become
available.
The TranX 2000 has two main components: the controller and the interface box. All the electronic
switches, solenoid drivers, and measurement electronics are located in the interface box so all of
the electronic components of the TranX 2000 are closer to the electronic solenoids they control.
You can plug your power cord into either the controller or the interface box to provide power to
the TranX 2000. SuperFlow recommends using the interface box whenever possible along with the
battery adapter cable provided in your kit to power up the TranX 2000.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to run the black clip to battery ground and the red clip to battery 12 volts.

Each TranX 2000 dedicated harness sets consists of two cables. One connects to the vehicle
transmission and the other connects the vehicle’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) harness. Both of
these adapters attach to the interface box. You only need to use the transmission side adapter if
working on the bench. To prevent user error, all ECU (harness) side cables have male pins at the
DB 25-way connector while all transmission side cables have female pins at the DB 25-way
connector.
Dedicated harness sets are listed on the transmission test sheets along with connector drawings
and wire charts. Original equipment connectors are used whenever possible, and new harness sets
are constantly being offered.

If you need an adapter set we do not currently offer, SuperFlow is happy to wire a set for a small
fee assuming you can provide the connectors. Please call in advance for more information.

Your kit also contains a small bag with 1 red test point lead, 1 black test point lead, and a spare 10-
amp fuse. To make sure a long life for your TranX 2000, use the test point leads whenever you use
a multi-meter (or other shop equipment) with your TranX 2000. They are designed to easily fit into
the test point sockets on your TranX 2000. The 10-amp fuse is provided in the event the one in
your power cord blows. To replace the fuse, unscrew the end of the lighter plug. Always replace
the fuse with a 3AG10 fast blow 10-amp fuse.

CHAPTER 3

OPERATION
IN THIS CHAPTER
• Overview
• Solenoid Test
• Shift Test
• Monitor Computer Test
Overview

3.1 Overview
This chapter covers the three test modes (Solenoid Test, Shift Test, and Monitor Computer). Using
a Ford E40D as an example, you will learn how to conduct each test and measure values using
your TranX 2000™.

You must first identify the transmission. Then look up the test code in Appendix F, “Test Index.”

Compare the data sheets to the transmission you are working on to be sure you have selected the
correct code.

The Ford E40D test sheet is located in Appendix A, “Ford Test Sheets.” The test code is 040.

On the test sheet you will see the part numbers for dedicated harness sets available for the
transmission type. Be sure to use the correct harness set. Some transmissions have different wiring
schematics for the same connector (GM 4T60E, Nissan/Jatco, etc.) Some connectors are used for
different transmissions with separate wiring (Ford AODE and AXODE/AX4N).
The E40D has two harness sets:
• 04X203 for vehicles before 1995
• 04X205 on model years 1995 and up
After powering up your TranX 2000 and making connections to the transmission, you are ready to
start testing. You can also use your sensor clip to connect to sensors (throttle position, speed, etc.)
you wish to test through Sensor Module A at this time.
A wire chart at the beginning of each test section shows which clips go to each test point on Sensor
Module A. Some transmissions have Transmission Oil Temperature (TOT) and other sensors that
run through the case connector, so be careful not run more than one sensor through the same test
point. The wiring chart on the back of each test sheet shows which sensor test points are being
used through the dedicated harness sets.

NOTE: The E40D has a TOT sensor that runs through the dedicated harness to Sensor Module A test
points 5 and 6. Use the yellow and blue clips on the sensor clip set to test any other sensor.

Operation

3.2 Solenoid Test

1. Enter the transmission code for the transmission you are testing.
2. Press the Select Test button and choose the solenoid test to run.

IMPORTANT: Be sure the engine is off whenever you run the solenoid test.

Use the Gear UP and DOWN arrows to isolate and select the solenoids. The transmission test
sheet lists which channel setting is used for each solenoid. Use the Duty Cycle UP and DOWN
arrows to adjust the pulsing of Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) solenoids such as EPC and
special-function solenoids.
3. The Ford E4OD has five solenoids:
• Shift solenoid 1
• Shift solenoid 2
• Lockup solenoid
• Coast clutch solenoid
• EPC solenoid
Use gears 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7 to test these solenoids. Adjust the duty cycle for EPC using the
Pressure % duty arrows.
4. As you select each solenoid, the output channel will move to the solenoid selected. SuperFlow
recommends using amps; however, you can measure amps or ohms for each solenoid by
pressing the Multimeter button.
Check each reading against the range given on the test sheet.
• If a solenoid reads within or close to the range, it is within tolerance electrically.
• If the reading is 0 or very high above the range, it is either open or shorted.

NOTES:
• You have not tested the hydraulic action of the solenoid. Just because the solenoid tests properly
electrically does not mean it is working hydraulically.
• Readings for variable-duty solenoids are averaged. You must multiply ohms readings for these
solenoids by the % duty you are checking them at.

Example:
40 ohms at 50% duty is actually 20 ohms (40 X .50 = 20 ohms).
It is best to test these solenoids measuring amps.
Amps measurements are also averaged; however, this is already accounted for in the test tables.

3-4 TranX 2000 Operator Manual

Shift Test

3.3 Shift Test

When you are satisfied the solenoids are electrically working properly, it is time to drive the
vehicle. Use the Select Test button to change to the Shift Test and start the engine. By using your
TranX 2000 to shift the vehicle, you will quickly determine whether the problem is in the
transmission or the ECU.
• To change gears, press the Gear UP and DOWN arrows. The gear you are in displays.
Using the table on the test sheet, you can verify that solenoids are energized by looking at
the Output Channel LEDs which light when the solenoid is on. Use the Select Channel
button to measure amps on any output channel.
• Using the truth table for the E4OD, you will see that in first gear Shift Solenoid 1 is on, while
Shift Solenoid 2 is off. The LED indicator next to channel 1 will light green to show the
solenoid is energized.
Using the Select Channel button, you can move the multimeter reading to channel 1 and
measure the current draw for the solenoid while it is on.
• Line pressure can be adjusted using the Pressure % Duty arrows to raise and lower the duty
cycle in 1% increments.
– Press Min/Max before pressing the UP and DOWN arrows to get to maximum duty
(minimum pressure) or minimum duty (full line pressure) quickly.
– As you increase or decrease the duty cycle, the Channel 7 LED indicator will glow orange.
This indicates the solenoid is pulsing.
– You can measure current draw by using the Select Channel button to read amps on
Channel 7. The 1% increments are useful when using a pressure gauge.
• The E4OD has an EPC solenoid. Use the Pressure % Duty arrows to increase duty (lower
line pressure) or decrease duty (raise line pressure.)
5. Special functions such as Lockup are controlled using the function buttons. The Shift/Monitor
test sheet table indicates which button to use for every transmission's special functions.
– Press the key to turn the solenoid on; press it again to turn it off. Use the Output Channel
LED indicator to monitor the solenoids.
– You can also use the Select Channel button to measure current on the specific solenoid
channel.
• PWM solenoids (usually lockup solenoids) can be adjusted using the Function% Duty
arrows to increase or decrease duty in 1% increments. Like the Pressure % Duty controls,
you can press the Min/Max button before pressing the UP/DOWN arrows to get to
minimum or maximum duty quickly.
• E4ODs have two special functions: Lockup and Coast Clutch.
– During the shift test, press the Lockup button to engage lockup
– Press the Function 3 button to engage the coast clutch.
Neither of these are pulsed, so the Function% Duty controls are blocked. Notice that the
window displaying the duty is not illuminated. Read the notes at the bottom of the test
sheet and notice that Coast Clutch is forced off in 4th gear. To turn it back on after the 4-3
downshift, press the Function 3 button again.

CAUTION: Come to a complete stop and turn the engine off before changing to the Monitor
Computer Test.

SuperFlow Technologies Group 3-5

Operation

3.4 Monitor Computer Test

1. To safely switch to the Monitor Computer test mode, come to a complete stop and turn the
engine off.
2. Press the Select Test button to switch to Monitor Computer test mode and restart the engine.
This prevents any backlash from the ECU to the TranX 2000 and vice versa. Now you can use
your TranX 2000 to monitor signals the ECU sends to the solenoids.
3. As you drive the vehicle, the gear it is in decodes and displays in the Gear area of the
transmission control section.
• If the vehicle has an EPC solenoid, the duty it is being run at will also display.
• As the vehicle switches gears, the output channel LEDs will indicate which solenoids are on.
This is the best way to monitor shift and special function solenoids. Check these against the
table provided on the test sheet. Additionally, you can use the Select Channel button to
measure current on any output channel that contains a solenoid.

For the E4OD:

• Shift Solenoid 1 (Output channel 1) will be on in 1st and 2nd gears.
• Shift Solenoid 2 (output channel 2) will be on in 2nd and 3rd gears.
• When the ECU signals lockup, output channel 5 will be on. In the same way, when the ECU
signals for the Coast Clutch, channel 6 will be on.
• The EPC solenoid (output channel 7) should be pulsing throughout the Monitor Computer
test.
• Use the Select Channel button to move from one output channel to the next, stopping to
read current for any solenoid you wish to examine.

D.1 Test Notes for Hyundai Transmissions

General Connection
• Always connect power TranX using battery clip adapter.
• Boot TranX, select code, and set to Monitor Computer before starting vehicle.
• Never perform a solenoid test with the vehicle running or ignition powered.
• Never switch to Shift test when vehicle is in Park, Reverse or in motion.
– Always come to a stop and shift to Neutral.
– If the vehicle is in Park to Reverse, the vehicle will go into fail-safe throttle mode.
• Shifting gears in “Shift Test” with Lockup (DCC) ON will result in very harsh shifts and could
stall engine.

Operation for VFS-equipped Transmissions

• Codes 421 and 431 let user set VFS current (and therefore pressure) with pressure buttons.
– If user sets to a high pressure, shifts will be harsh.
– If user sets to low pressure, shifts will be soft.
• Codes 422 and 432 will drop VFS pressure to a low setting upon a shift, regardless of what user
has entered in pressure buttons to perform a soft shift.
• Codes 423 and 433 will set VFS pressure to a medium setting upon a shift, regardless of what
user has entered in pressure buttons to perform a firm shift.
• Codes 424 and 434 will set VFS pressure high upon a shift, regardless of what user has entered
in pressure buttons to perform a very firm shift.
• F4A w/VFS monitors ECU current on channel 7 in Monitor mode but uses channel 9 to monitor
current in Solenoid test and Shift test.
• F5A w/VFS monitors ECU current on channel 9 in Monitor mode but uses channel 7 to monitor
current in Solenoid test and Shift test.
• User must set duty-cycle buttons for both VFS and lockup (DCC) in solenoid test.
• All shift solenoids are driven at 50% duty cycle when powered in Solenoid test or Shift sest.
Since ohms is calculated from voltage powering unit and current supplied to solenoid, the
reading will be about twice as much as the specified resistance of the solenoid in service
manuals (9 ohms for a 4.5-ohm solenoid).
