66th Anniversary of Revolution Day of Burma

Date: : 27-March-2011

On this day 66 years ago, the Burma National Army, founded and led by our late architect of the country’s independence
General Aung San, launched military offensives against the occupying fascist Japanese forces in the country. The people
of Burma also joined hands with General Aung San’s forces and ultimately defeated the Japanese fascists on the eve of
the last Great War, and thus ended their brutal occupation of the country. It heralded a milestone of solidarity between
the people of Burma and the people’s army conquering the nation’s enemy and overcoming a crisis. Rigors of life
stemming from the brutal fascist rule and resulting in poverty and destitution among the people compelled the various
political factions and activists to come to ONE decision, END the fascist rule in Burma. Thus, the army formed by the sons
and daughters of the people was ready for the nation’s call ever since.

However, the current regime is cunningly employing this tactic, categorizing the members of the armed forces as a
privileged class, having access to unlimited opportunities and thus wealth and power, beyond their imagination and
ordinary citizenry of the country, today living in fear and under oppression, not to mention in dire straits reeling under a
failed and chaotic economy and mired in a cobweb of political deadlock, stemming from the military regime still refusing
to honor the 1990 election results and balking at a meaningful dialogue with the National League for Democracy led by
Daw Aung Suu Kyi.

Than Shwe led military regime’s practice of ‘fear and conquer policy’ - looting, raping, burning, killing and confiscating
ancestral homes and lands of the ethnic minorities – has culminated in our brethren fleeing to neighboring countries and
then relocating to third countries. Also, the lives, properties and future of the members of the opposition alliances are
destroyed by the ruling military regime in much the same way.

Life under the military rule, hard pressed on all aspects and severely cracking down on dissent is reminiscent of a case of
history repeating itself – the horrible life of the people under fascist Japanese rule.

In this explosive situation, the only one missing puzzle to complete the picture in favor of the people of Burma,
specifically to topple military tyranny in the country, is the role of the military leaders like General Aung San to lead and
regain the role of people’s army and respectable place at this juncture and need, and solve the existing political
deadlock and chaotic economic situation, in line with its obligation and definition also, and as entrusted with
protecting the sovereignty of the country and safety of the citizenry.

This is high time also for the officers and men of the Burma Army today, to ‘abandon’ a fistful of corrupt and cowardly
generals, who keep on committing the gross violations of human rights in order to remain in power without regarding
the country’s calamity of all aspects far too long.
Lastly, on this day while commemorating this auspicious day and honoring the members of General Aung San’s Burma
Army which drove out the Japanese fascists out of Burma, we call on today’s military personnel of Burma to assume
their rightful and respectable role - safeguard the sovereignty of Burma and protect its citizenry – in place of
enhancing a brutal military rule under the boot of Than Shwe and his thugs today.
