1. Introduction

Triangle of forces is a diagram used to show that 3 forces meet a point when they act on a body on a
similar plane. This diagram can be used to find the magnitude of 2 forces component when the third
is known. For example, when a weight W is supported by two ropes positioned as in Figure 1, the
forces exerted by the ropes. F1 and F2 can be found by the triangle of forces.

The objective of this experiment is to show that the three non-parallel forces equilibrium can be
represented by a triangle of forces (provided that the direction of forces is known).

2. Apparatus

3. Procedure

3.1 Test 1

1. The diagram board was positioned and secured with screws and nuts through holes on the
mounting panel.
2. The three pulleys were positioned as shown in Figure 2 and was secured with nuts.
3. A sheet of paper was clipped to the diagram board.
4. Two of the ring cord was passed over and upper the pulleys and the weight hooks was
attached to the end of them.
5. Another weight hook was attached to the third and it was let hung freely.
6. Weight was added to the cords to achieve 2.7N, 3.2N and 2.2N respectively.
7. The ring was released and the weight was let settled freely.
8. The positioned of three cords were marked with pencil dots in the paper.
9. The paper was removed, the lines representing the three cords has been drawn, and the
weight supported by each cord has been written.

3.3 Test 2

1. A new sheet of paper was clipped to the diagram board.

2. The weights were kept the same as in the Test 1, but the centre weight was passed
over the lower pulley as shown in Figure 2.
3. The new position of three cords was marked and the line representing the cords was
drawn as in Test 1. The weight supported by each cord was recorded.
5. Discussion

 To find the magnitude of two component forces when the third one is known, firstly measure all the
angle in triangle of force. From two of three angle we can calculate the the magnitude of two
component force by using Sine rule.

or

 Other than magnitude of force, with triangle of force we also can determine the direction of
the force.

6.0 conclusion

The triangle of force can be apply on three non-parallel forces equilibrium.
