Caucasian, 7% Hispanic, and 7% Multi-cultural. The population consists of mainly
middle class socioeconomic status. The population is composed of 25% NCLB transfers
from Needs Improvement schools. The students are 9th graders, 95% of which are in the
9th grade for the first time. All students read on or above grade level. They all use internet
and social networking sites on a regular basis. The primary learning styles of the targeted
group of learners are interpersonal and visual. After these top two, students also have
strong aptitudes toward musical and kinesthetic learning styles.

ARCS
Students’ attention will be gained by other students, preferably juniors. These
upperclassmen will help them to see the correlation between test scores and reading. This
will ultimately increase their chances of college entrance. The juniors will help the
freshman to see that the school wide silent reading can be used for pleasure reading and
increase reading comprehension simultaneously.

3. Objectives
A. Ninth grade students will be target learners.
B. Juniors will recommend authors and specific books based on student interests. The
goal will be for learners to select their own pleasure reading based on these
recommendations, with the goal of promoting silent sustain reading as a time for
weekly pleasure reading.
C. Given access to a student directed blog, learners will contribute to discussions based
on authors and books read during silent reading. Blogs will be student created based
on recommended readings and suggestions from the posts of the target learners.
D. Students will be required to contribute to two separate discussions at least once
sharing thoughts on the books they read. Guidelines for posting will be specified by
teacher.
