Alphabetical Order

When we want to look up a word in a dictionary, a name in a phone book, a


book in the library, we can only find it if we understand alphabetical order.

We start by looking at the first letter in the word.

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
These words are in alphabetical order:
1. apple (begins with the letter A)
2. banana (begins with the letter B)
3. carrot (begins with the letter C)

These words are also in alphabetical order:


1. frog (begins with the letter F)
2. paper (begins with the letter P)
3. umbrella (begins with the letter U)

Put the following color words in alphabetical order:


red blue yellow orange green
pink white

If some words begin with the same letter, look at the 2nd letter to
figure out alphabetical order.

5. book (The 2nd letter is O.)

Sometimes we have to look beyond the 2nd letter to the 3rd letter or
even further.
