EXT. OUTSIDE ARTHUR ROAD PRISON. BOMBAY -- MORNING

A shot of the prison.

INT. ARTHUR ROAD PRISON. BOMBAY -- MORNING

A HAND puts the belongings of an inmate on the table. As the


belongings are arranged -

JAIL SUPERINTENDENT (O.S.)


Ek ghadi...batua...chaar sau saintaless
rupaye...belt...locket...sone ki angoothi...

JAIL WARDEN (40; stocky) looks up after ticking the items on the
list.

He is looking at THE MAN (dark eyes, 35 and has giant butcher's


shoulders) who is staring at this belongings.

JAIL SUPERINTENDENT (CONT'D)


Dekh le bhai...sab barabar hai...

THE MAN
Ek cheez kam hai bhai...

JAIL SUPERINTENDENT
(rechecking list)
Kya?

THE MAN
Jo teen saal liye the mere...woh bhi wapas
kar do...

JAIL SUPERINTENDENT
Do mahine pehle chodd diya...achche chaal-
chalan ki wajah se...yehi soch ke khush
hole...chal sign kar...

The Warden puts a pen in front of the man and opens a page on
the register.

ON PAGE

An array of signatures. Below that the Man's hand signs in


Marathi.

RAGHAV KRISHNA.

EXT. OUTSIDE ARTHUR ROAD PRISON. BOMBAY -- LATER

Raghav Krishna comes out of the guarded gate. Looks around,


happy to be out.

RAGHAV
Aye Taxi....

A TAXI DRIVER starts his taxi and takes a turn to come towards
the prison gate.

INT. TAXI -- MORNING

Raghav sits down in the taxi. The taxi driver turns the meter
and asks -

TAXI DRIVER
Kidhar sahab?

RAGHAV
Dagdi Chaal.

CUT TO:

EXT. STREETS -- LATER

The taxi drives through the morning traffic. Raghav Krishna


looks out of the window, a sense of wonderment comes to his eyes
while looking at the city.

CUT TO:

EXT. CHAWL -- LATER

The taxi stops outside the chawl. All around it is the usual
commotion and noise. Vendors, hawkers, women fighting over water,
kids fighting over kite, film songs playing on a radio.

A few seconds later, the taxi door opens. Raghav Krishna gets
off. He closes the door and the taxi moves away.

Raghav Krishna moves not. He stands his ground. His eyes soaking
in the chawl.

The commotion around him reduces to conversation, the conversation


to murmur and then the murmur to silence. Even the radio has
been turned off.

Raghav Krishna is still looking at the chawl.

Then, he takes his first step towards the chawl.

And some people fall at his feet.

PEOPLE AT FEET
Bhau...

With more steps, more people come and touch his feet and move
away.

PEOPLE TOUCHING FEET


Raghu bhai...

With tears in eyes they kiss his hands. Raghav keeps moving.
Reaches the stairs of the chawl and starts climbing.

Someone pulls crackers out and sets it to fire. The fire crackers
rattle off like a machine gun.

Raghav climbs the stairs. People from down below look up to


him.

He turns around, having registered that he is out for real.


That this is not a dream.

He raises his hand slowly to wave at the crowd. The crowd cheers.

Raghav Krishna smiles at last like a free man.

Opening credits begin with music. A 30 sec V.O. announces brief


facts about Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

EXT. MOUNTAIN RANGE. MANALI -- EARLY MORNING

Shot of the mountain range.

BRINDA (V.O.)
Haan maa... mujhe ab bhi kuch din aur
lagenge...

INT. P.C.O -- MORNING

Brinda is standing inside the phone booth. Her eyes wet...

BRINDA
Kaam thoda zyada hai...

INTERCUT:

INT. BRINDA'S HOUSE -- EARLY MORNING

Mrs. Sawhney is on the phone, wet sentiments in her eyes too.


Mr. Sawhney is standing next to her.

MRS. SAWHNEY
Wapas kab tak aayegi...?

BRINDA
Maa...please...aisee awaaz mein poochna
bandh karo...unnecessarily mujhe bhi rula
rahe ho...aa jaaongi kuch din mein...

Brinda sees that Mahendra is standing outside, looking in her


direction. She turns her face away.

MRS. SAWHNEY
Yeh toh tune jaate wakt bhi bola tha.
Pandrah din ho gaye hain...aur aaj pehli
baar phone kiya hai tune...

BRINDA
Kaam kuch zyada tha maa...

MRS. SAWHNEY
Vaibhav ka phone aaya tha tere
peeche...tujhse baat karne ke liye...woh
abhi tak guilty feel kar raha hai...us-din
tujhse tere bhai Arjun ke baare mein baat
karne ke liye...

BRINDA
Maine usse us din bhi kaha tha...'it's ok'

MRS. SAWHNEY
...Aur keh raha tha kisi client ka kaam
nikal aaya hai...shayad teen mahine baad
phir usse India aana pade...

Brinda can see that Mahendra is getting impatient.

BRINDA
Maa...mujhe rakhna padega...baad mein call
karti hoon...

MRS. SAWHNEY
Oh...ok Brinda...

BRINDA
Bye mom...kiss dad for me...

MRS. SAWHNEY
Bye...

Brinda hangs up. Opens the door of the phone booth and comes
out.

CUT TO:

EXT. STREET. MANALI -- MORNING

Brinda crosses the street. Comes where Mahendra is waiting.

Mahendra notices the redness in her eyes.

MAHENDRA
Tumhari aankhon ko kya hua?

Brinda doesn't look at his directly.

BRINDA
Kuch nahin. Shayad dhuan lag gaya...

MAHENDRA
(nods)
Dhuan...bina aag ke?

BRINDA
(nods)
Haan...bina aag ke...

MAHENDRA
Apne America waale dost se baat kar rahi
thi kya?

Brinda is stunned.

BRINDA
Tumhe kaise pata mere America wale dost ke
baare mein?

Mahendra shrugs.

MAHENDRA
Police wala hoon...

CUT TO:

INT. NCB BOMBAY. MAIN HALL -- DAY

Usmaan walks in through the open gate. The sentry closes the
gate, behind him.

Usmaan stops as he sees Kartik.

Kartik, back towards Usmaan, is putting some files away in the


cupboard. Usmaan comes up.

USMAAN
Mahendra kyun har-baar zid karta hai...

Kartik turns as he hears Usmaan's voice.

USMAAN (CONT'D)
(smiles)
...Tumhare saath jaane ki yeh mujhe us din
samajh aaya.

KARTIK
Main... samjha nahin sir?

USMAAN
Main tumhe 'thanks' bhi kehna chahta tha
aur 'sorry' bhi. Sorry us-din Khaled ko
godown se bahar le jaane mein maine thodi
jaldi kar di.

KARTIK
Come on sir... main aapke saath bhi hota
tab bhi woh yahi karta...

USMAAN
Nahin Kartik. Maine galti ki - sorry.

Kartik, feels awkward nodding.

KARTIK`
It's...ok...sir.

Usmaan extends his hand. Kartik takes it, unsure.

USMAAN
And thanks. Us-din tumne bacha liya...you
saved the day.

Kartik shakes his head, slowly.

KARTIK
Lekin...I couldn't save the day at the court.
Khaled nikal gaya. Defense ne panchname
mein ek point pakad liya...'religious
feelings were hurt' yeh mention kyun nahin
hai...

Usmaan holds his face from falling. He smiles instead to pull


his face away from gravity.

USMAAN
Next time Kartik. Kahan tak bhagega...past
criminal record bahut strong hai uska...

CUT TO:

INT. CAR -- DAY

Ansari is driving. Dayal Babu is sitting next to him.

ANSARI
Kiska?

DAYAL
Ussi ladke...Khaled ka. Criminal record
achcha hai...aur hoshiyaar bhi hai...us-din
court mein NCB ke haath se saaf nikal gaya...

ANSARI
Hmmm...kiske liye kaam karta hai?

DAYAL
Abhi tak kisi gang ke saath nahin hai.
Khud hi thoda bahut jo kar pata hai...kar
leta hai. Isiliye shayad pakda bhi jaata
hai...lekin kaam mein safai hai uske...maine
court records mein dekha...darwaze wagerah
mein concealments achche se bana leta
hai...export khud hi karta hai isiliye docks
par pehchaan bhi hai uski...

Ansari nods.

ANSARI
Mil lijiye. Pasand aaye toh Raja se milwa
dena. Kaam ka hua toh training shuru karwa
denge iski bhi..

DAYAL
Hmmm...aur yeh Wasim ko jo kuch-din pehle
Queen's leke gaye...accounts
dikhaye...jaldbaazi nahin kar rahe tum...?

ANSARI
Ek na ek din toh kaam samajhna hi hai
usse...padh liya...likh liya...ab dheere-
dheere seekh bhi le toh achcha hoga...

DAYAL
Jitna kam janega utna achcha hoga uske
liye...jo pata hi nahin hoga...toh
interrogation mein bolne ka darr bhi nahin
rahega...

ANSARI
Jo pata hoga kya zaroori hai. Kya bolne se
nuksaan ho sakta hai woh Wasim kabhi nahin
bolega. Nahin pata hoga toh galti se zaroori
baat ko mamuli samajh ke bol dega...

DAYAL
Yahan se jaane ko ho. Kuch din ruk jaate
Wasim ko dhande mein utaarne ke pehle.

Ansari stares at the road ahead.

ANSARI
Yahan se jaane ke liye hi toh yeh sab kar
raha hoon. Dubai wale har baar ki tarah
iss baar bhi naatak kar rahe hain. Mujhe
Karachi. Kathmandu. Ya Hong Kong hoke
jaana padega...

DAYAL
Kyun? Ab Dubai wale kya chahte hain?

ANSARI
Mujhe aane hi nahin dena chahte...

DAYAL
Aur isiliye tumne Wasim ko taiyaar karna
shuru kar diya. Taki khud Kathmandu ya
Hong Kong jake nayi jagah intezaam kar sako.

Ansari nods.

ANSARI
Pinto ki pehchaan hai Hong Kong mein. Aur
phir Pinto khud ab zyada aa nahin payega
yahan. Giraftari ke baad thoda hoshiyaar
ho gaya hai. Agar yeh ladka...Khaled...
kaam ka nikalta hai...toh Pinto ki jagah le
sakta hai. Wasim meri jagah sambhaal
lega...Raja dono ko train kar dega...

DAYAL
Wasim raaton-raat kya kar lega?

ANSARI
Aur itne saal ragadne ke baad main kaunsa
jhanda gaad diya. Tab se laga hoon Dubai
shift hone mein - aur woh log ab-tak ragad
rahe hain mujhe....

INT. DRI BUILDING. DEPUTY DIRECTOR'S CABIN -- DAY

THE DOOR opens after a knock. ASHWANI KHANNA (38, looking like
a chartered accountant. He is wearing a coat and tie and rimless
specs. There is patience in his manner.)

DEPUTY DIRECTOR
Ah. Ashwani. Kahan the tum?

ASHWANI
Court gaya tha sir. Aapko kal bataya toh
tha.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR
Ah. Right. How was it?

ASHWANI
Quick. Maine sign kiya. Usne sign kiya
aur bas - ho gaya.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR
Tum toh divorce ke baare mein aise baat kar
rahe hai jaise Maggi noodles ho.

ASHWANI
Maggi noodles better hota hai sir. Kuch
taste toh hota hai.

Deputy Director almost laughs, shakes his head and pulls a docket
out and puts it on the desk.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR
NCB iss Naved Ansari ke peeche pada hai.

Ashwani Khanna picks up the docket.

ASHWANI
Naved Ansari - woh toh early nineties mein
gayab ho gaya tha na...ab kahan se aa gaya?

DEPUTY DIRECTOR
Vashisht laya hai information. New Delhi
se...

ASHWANI
(smiles; corrects)
Capital se...

DEPUTY DIRECTOR
(smiles too)
Haan haan Capital se. Ek toh yeh Dilli
waale Capital Capital bahut karte hain.
Revenue sabse zyada Bombay kama ke deta
hai...Capital Delhi ko kehte hain...

Ashwani opens the docket.

Vashisht aur uski team Delhi mein ek Nigerian
Diplomat ko follow kar rahe the...ussi se
Ansari ke details mile. Apparently Bombay
mein sabe bada drug smuggling operation hai
iss Ansari ka.

ASHWANI
Apparently nahin sir. Agar network Ansari
ka hai toh sabse bada hi hoga. Cheez hi
aisee hai yeh Ansari.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR
Tum jaante ho iske baare mein?

ASHWANI
(nods)
Mere favorite case studies mein se ek tha.
Sirf gangster nahin hai. Achcha business
mind bhi hai. Late eighties mein jiss tarah
se isne apne rivals ko khatam karke apna
control set-up kiya tha kaafi interesting
study tha. Iski sab purani files padhi
hain maine.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR
(re; docket in
Ashwani's hand)
Ab nayi wali bhi padh lo.

ASHWANI
(nods)
Iss nayi file ka matlab hai - pandrah saal
pehle police aur baaki law enforcement
agencies ne bahut badi galti ki thi yeh
soch ke ki Ansari apne sab kaam chodd ke
kahin nikal gaya hai.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR
Nikalne ki planning ab phir kar raha hai.
Kahin abroad. Jahan usse safe haven mil
sake. NCB usse bahar jaane se pehle pakadna
chahta hai.

Deputy Director looks at Ashwani.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR (CONT'D)


Aur main usse NCB se pehle.

Ashwani nods, looks at the docket. Then stands. He reaches the


door and turns towards Deputy Director.

ASHWANI
Ek baat Vashisht ne aapko nahin batai hogi...

Deputy Director looks at Ashwani.

ASHWANI (CONT'D)
...Aapka purana dost... Usmaan Ali Malik -
bahut bada dushman hai Ansari ka.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR
Usmaan se meri koi dosti nahin hai. Jab se
usne DRI ke against affidavit file kiya hai
uss gangster ko bachane ke liye tab se Usmaan
mera bhi dushman bann gaya hai...

ASHWANI
(smiles)
Soch lijiye sir...dushman ka dushman dost
hota hai...

DEPUTY DIRECTOR
Nahin Ashwani. Dushman dushman hota hai.
Aur target target.

Ashwani nods. Opens the door and exits.

INT. NCB BOMBAY. ZD'S ROOM -- DAY

Usmaan hands a newspaper to Krishnan.

Usmaan and Kartik stand waiting while Krishnan reads the news
DRI ARRESTS NIGERIAN DIPLOMAT IN NEW DELHI; CASH SEIZED.

Krishnan looks at Usmaan and Kartik.

KRISHNAN
Emmanuel Nwude? Connection kya hai?

USMAAN
Nwude ko woh cash Raja ne diya tha...Naved
Ansari ke aadmi ne...

KRISHNAN
Yeh Brinda aur Mahendra ne inform kiya...

Usmaan nods.

USMAAN
Brinda ke last email mein yeh information
tha.

Krishnan looks worried for the first time. His eyes move back
to the newspaper on his desk.

KRISHNAN
D. R. I.

USMAAN
Yes sir...DRI. Unhe Nwude se Ansari ke
baare mein pata chal gaya hoga. Aur ab-tak
DRI ne Ansari par kaam karna bhi shuru kar
diya hoga. If we don't move fast...DRI hum
se pehle Ansari tak pahunch jayega...

Krishnan looks at Usmaan.

KRISHNAN
How prepared are we?

Usmaan looks at Kartik. Karik puts the folder that he's been
preparing in front of Krishnan.

KARTIK
Isme woh saari intelligence hai sir jo humein
case shuru karne ke liye chahiye...uska
residential area ka information...vehicles
ke number...un companies ke details jo uska
front hain...

Krishnan goes through the file.

KRISHNAN
...And you managed to get a photograph
also...

Kartik smiles.

KARTIK
Ansari ka beta mere bete ke school mein
padhta hai...

Krishnan looks at Usmaan.

KRISHNAN
Aapke saath kaun rahega?

USMAAN
Kartik.

KRISHNAN
Ok. Then Naved Ansari is the prime target
for you. Jo aap chahte the Usmaan sahab.

Usmaan beams.

CUT TO:

EXT. STREET. MANALI -- DAY

Isolated street comprising of few huts. The huts seem to be in


urgent need of repairs.

A GROUP OF 7 BACKPACKERS reach a hut. They are accompanied by a


LOCAL GUIDE.

More LOCALS hang outside the hut. Some look stoned. Some look
mean.

The local who has brought the backpackers along walks up to one
of the men guarding a hut. The backpackers' guide hands some
money to the man from the hut.

The man counts the money and then disappears inside the hut.
The guide turns towards backpackers and smiles.

Some backpackers smile. Some nod. Brinda and Mahendra are among
them.

The man returns from the hut and hands some stuff to the guide.
The guide comes back with the stuff and hands some stuff to his
clients.

When he passes some to Mahendra, Mahendra pulls him closer and


whispers in his ears and slips a wad of money into guide's pocket.

The guide looks at Mahendra. Then turns back and looks at the
man from the hut.

The local guide walks back to the man from the hut and whispers
something. The man from the hut looks at Mahendra.

CUT TO:

INT. INSIDE HUT -- DAY

The door opens. The man comes inside. Brinda and Mahendra follow
him inside.

Their eyes move about, taking in the surroundings. The man closes
the door.

Mahendra turns to him. Smiles. The man in response just presses


a button on the wall. A bell faintly rings somewhere inside.

MAN
Kitna maal chahiye?

MAHNEDRA
Sau - sava sua tola. Main har season itna
bech sakta hoon. Goa mein. Mera shack hai
wahan. Jaise-jaise delivery badhegi.
Contacts badhenge. Maal ki zaroorat bhi
badhegi.

The door to the end of the room opens. TWO MORE MEN come into
the room. Both locals.

MAN 1
(in local)
He's asking for 100-125 tola.

MAN 2
(in local)
Search him. He looks like a cop.

The first man and the third man move closer to Mahendra.

MAN 1
Bag nikaal.

Mahendra takes the backpack off his shoulders and puts it on


floor. One man goes through the bag and the another one frisks
Mahendra.

Then both the men look at the third man.

MAN 1 (CONT'D)
(in local)
No gun.

MAN 2
(in local)
Nothing in the bag either.

MAHENDRA
(to Man 1)
Abhi ho gaya talashi toh kaam ka baat karein.

Man 1 looks at the third man, his eyes asking him 'should we?
Should we not?'

MAN 3
(in local)
Search the girl first. She looks worst.

Man 1 and Man 2 leave Mahendra and walk up to Brinda.

MAN 1
Bag neeche madam.

MAHENDRA
Hey...yeh kya hai? Meri talashi ho gayi
na.

MAN 1
Humein kaisa pata iske paas hathyar ya camera
nahin hai? Tape-recorder nahin hai? Tum
police nahin ho? Yeh akhbaar wali nahin
hai?

Man 1 goes around Brinda and takes her bag off her shoulders.
The look in Brinda's eyes tells Mahendra 'whoever touches her
first is going to die.'

Man 2 gets busy with the bag. Man 1 is about to touch her to
frisk when Mahendra looks at Man 3.

MAHENDRA
Ek minute...kitna tola zyada se zyada mil
sakta hai yahan se...

Man 1 stops. Looks at Mahendra.

MAN 1
Tujhe sau-sawa sau hi chahiye na.

Mahendra starts to pull the money out from his pockets. Bundles.

MAHENDRA
Nahin. Do sau bhi chaiye ho sakta hai.
Teen sau bhi. Ek hazar tola bhi. Tum kitna
de sakte ho?

MAN 1
Tu bol. tujhe kitna chahiye.

MAHENDRA
(shakes his head)
Tum batao. Tumhari takat kitna supply karne
ki hai?

MAN 1
Tu maal khareedne aaya hai. Ya khet.

Mahendra takes some more money out.

MAHENDRA
Paisa haath mein hai. Kuch bhi khareed
sakta hoon.

MAN 3
Tujhe jitna chahiye bol? Hum kyun batayen
hum kitna de sakte hain?

MAHENDRA
(smiles)
Kisi lallu-panju ko toh choone nahin doonga
meri girlfriend ko. Pata laga tum se nahin
bann pada toh kisi aur ke paas jaana pada.
Phir woh talashi lega. Agar maal de sakte
ho toh talashi le sakte ho.

Man 3 looks long enough at Brinda. In the meantime,

MAN 2
(in local)
Nothing in bag.

Man 3 looks at Mahendra.

MAN 3
Saade saat sau tola.

Mahendra pulls out all the money that he has. He bends down and
puts all the money on his bag.

MAHENDRA
Mujhe dedh-hazaar tola chahiye.

Man 3 looks at the money and smirk.

MAN 3
Itne paison mein? Seb khareedne hain ya
charas...

MAHENDRA
Yeh...advance hai...tum maal dikhao...main
poora paisa dikhata hoon...

Man 3 weighs Mahendra with his eyes for a few seconds.

MAN 3
Thoda time lagega. Pahad chadna padega..

Mahendra walks up to Brinda, picks her bag from the floor and
hands it to her.

MAHENDRA
Toh phir talashi bhi wahin hogi...

Then he turns to Man 3.

MAHENDRA (CONT'D)
Kab chal sakte hain. Mere paas zyada time
nahin hai. Mera truck booked hai. Maal
yahan se Goa pahunche mein kam-se-kam hafta
lagega.

MAN 3
Agar tum chadne ki halat mein ho toh abhi
chal sakte hain. Chadai kaafi hai.

Mahendra puts the money back in his pockets and backpack.

MAHENDRA
(smiles)
Hum toh aaye hi chadai karne hain. Chalo.

He puts his backpack on the shoulder.

CUT TO:

INT. HOUSE. DAGDI CHAWL -- DAY

Two men are in tight embrace, Raghav and Selva. Other TWO MEN
in the room look at them. [We have seen these men before with
Selva.]

When they separate from the embrace, Selva has tears in his eyes.

SELVA
Tujhe andar kya daala pandu log ne...yahan
dhande ki vaat lag gayi...

RAGHAV
Galti meri thi...gun anti mein laga hua
tha...aur daaru chadi hui thi...police ne
roka daaru ka baas check karne ke liye
tha...gun saath mil gaya...

PETER
Bhau kuch nahin sambhla hum logon se...yeh
Ali aur Peter...bahut try maara...lekin Ansari
ke aadmi godown loot lete the...apne ilaake
mein uske chokre apne ladkon ko maar jaate
the...dheere-dheere apne saare distributor
aur grahak tod liye Ansari ne...jo bache
unki kamar police ne tod di...hamare maal
aur aadmiyon ki khabar police ko Ansari hi
deta tha...

Raghav nods.

RAGHAV
Paisa kitna chukana hai?

ALI
Bheryani Seth ka kareeb tees peti dena hai.
Lekin godam khaali pada hai...

SELVA
Aur godam mein maal hota bhi toh dete
kise...distributron ne order bhejna bandh
kar diya hai...

Raghav looks at all of them, one by one.

RAGHAV
...pistol...goliyaan...woh toh hain na...ki
woh bhi sab gaya...

SELVA
Kuch hai...kuch bech diya...ladke log ko
gang mein banaye rakhne ke liye thoda kharcha-
paani dena tha...

RAGHAV
Achcha kiya...ladke saath hain...hathyar
hain...Bheryani se main baat karta
hoon...thoda paisa aur utha lenge...maal
bhi aa jayega...

Raghav's men do not share his optimism.

RAGHAV (CONT'D)
Aye bhai log...humein baap-dada ne vasiyat
mein toh yeh dhanda diya nahin tha...

Raghav weighs air with his hands.

RAGHAV (CONT'D)
...Inhi haathon se khada kiya tha. Phir
kar lenge.

Raghav puts his hands on Ali and Peter's shoulders. Selva wipes
his tears.

CUT TO:

EXT. HILLY TRAIL. MANALI -- DAY

Mountains. Vast landscape. Three tiny figures trekking across


it - one a little ahead. Two behind.

MAHENDRA (V.O.)
Kya tum sach mein apne Mr. America se pyaar
karti ho?

BRINDA (V.O.)
Tumse matlab.

An old derelict chimney looms large behind them.

kiya. Phir Ansari ko Dayal Babu vakil mila.

toh main abhi bhi kisi machine ke baju mein

tab hi agar mujhse baat karte toh yeh problem
nahin aata.

Mujhe laga tha sab theek-thaak jayega.
Musa tha wahan meri taraf se baat karne ke
liye.

Dayal opens a fresh page on his writing pad.

DAYAL
Naved. Ghusne toh koi tumhe Colaba mein
bhi nahin dena chahta tha. Lekin ghuse na -
poore Mumbai mein dhanda failaya na. Jaise
Mumbai. Waise Dubai. Shatranj mein kaunsa
mohra kahan baitha hai - ek baar samajh aa
jaye - chaal apne aap bann jaati hai.

Dayal puts his pen to pad.

Raghav stares at his area, his fortress. Selva stares at him.

Sun has set. Crop is silhouetted against the dark sky.

Mahendra and Brinda are taking a break from their trek. They
are quite up in the mountains. Man 1 sits a little aside, smoking
a cigarette.

BRINDA
Mujhe toh laga tha humne saari fasal khatam
kar di hai.

MAHENDRA
Jitni U.N. ko dikhane ke liye jalai hogi
woh poori fasal ka dasvaan hissa bhi nahin
hoga.

Brinda looks at the field. Sound of buzzing insects and passing


breeze through the crop.

MAHENDRA (CONT'D)
Chahe Manali ka gaanja ho. Ya Columbia mein
paida hone wali Cocaine. Ya Afghanistan
mein ugne wali afeem - saari drug smuggling
shuru kisanon se hoti hai. Aur sunke ajeeb
lagta hai - lekin har kisaan ki tarah yeh

Usmaan comes into the cabin. Sees Kartik is busy making his
notes from the files that he had left with him.

Usmaan takes his seat. Kartik looks at him.

KARTIK
Ansari itna upar tak pahunch gaya tha ki
usse pandrah saal pehle asaani se andar
daala ja sakta tha.

Usmaan nods.

USMAAN
Yeh ek galti hum law ebforcement walon se
ho gayi. Aur yahin Ansari baazi maar gaya.
Jo wakt Ansari ke upar pahunchne ke intezaar
mein humne bitaya - woh time ka usne khoob
istemaal kiya. He disappeared from records.
Woh is time mein apne front mein itne log
aur itni companies khada karta raha ki uska
naam dheere-dheere crime or civil records
mein se nikal gaya.

Kartik puts his folder on Ansari among the other files.

KARTIK
Aur aaj uss tak pahunchne ke liye itne logon
aur companies ke smoke screen ko hatana
padega that it will take one hell of an
evidence trail for prosecution to put him
behind bars.

Phone on Usmaan's desk rings. Usmaan answers it.

USMAAN

(sudden seriousness)
Ok...I'm on my way.

Usmaan puts the phone down and looks at Kartik.

USMAAN (CONT'D)
Woh ladki...Binata Sarkar...usne suicide
karne ki koshish ki...

Faint thunder. Slowly the drizzle comes down and wets the
asphalt. The first rain of the monsoon.

People, under covers of bus stops or shops, put their hands out
to feel the drops.

EXT. OUTSIDE A FIVE STAR HOTEL -- NIGHT

SEEN FROM A DISTANCE

Julie and A CLIENT of hers come out of the gate. They smile at
each other, say things that we don't hear and after few second
bid adieu.

The client gets into a car.

Julie comes down the steps.

EXT. STREET. OPPOSITE THE HOTEL -- NIGHT

Raghav is watching Julie, standing in the drizzle. He crosses


the wet street.

BACK TO -

Julie. She hails a cab. The cab drives up and halts.

RAGHAV (O.S.)
Julie...

Julie looks up. Cannot believe her eyes. Raghav smiles a genuine
smile.

RAGHAV (CONT'D)
Theek ho?

Julie nods. Manages a smiles.

JULIE
Theek hoon. Kab laute?

RAGHAV
Aaj subah. Do mahine jaldi chodd diya.
Achche chaal-chalan ki wajah se.

EXT. MARINE DRIVE -- NIGHT

High tide. Not many people around. Water crashes on the rocks.
Julie and Raghav sit under the shade of a bus stop.

RAGHAV
Yeh teen saal maine kaise nikale main jaanta
hoon. Dhande ka khayal aata tha. Lekin
usse zyada tera. Sochta tha kahan hogi.
Kya kar rahi hogi.

Julie nods slowly.

thi.

Raghav holds her hand.

RAGHAV
Main aa gaya hoon na. Kuch karne ki zaroorat
nahin hai ab.

JULIE
Tu teen saal baad aaya hai. Phir andar
chala gaya toh.

Raghav nods.

RAGHAV
Achcha tujhe jaise jamta hai waise kar.
Bas saath reh mere. Maine aaj tak tujhe
sawal nahin kiya. Ab bhi nahin karoonga...

JULIE
Ek woh Selva kaafi hai na sawal karne ke
liya...

Raghav smiles gently.

RAGHAV
Selva ko mera bahut tension rehta hai.
Isliye itna pooch-taach karta hai. Par dil
ka bura nahin hai...

Julie nods.

JULIE
Dubla ho gaya tu.

Raghav looks at himself. Shakes his head.

RAGHAV
Tera pyaar nahin mila na isiliye kamzor ho
gaya hoon. Abhi tu mil gayi. Wapas dikhne
lagoonga...

Julie smiles at the gentleness of this giant. He shifts closer


to her. Puts his arm around her shoulder.

RAGHAV (CONT'D)
Mera bahut intezaar kiya na tune...

JULIE
Tere ladkon ko bhi bahut intezaar tha
tera...tere bina kaam-vaam sab ruka pada
hai...

Raghav nods.

RAGHAV
Sab sambhal jayega. Tu hai. Ladke saath

Bhaigiri bahut pakane wala kaam hai. Kamane
ke liye. Zinda rehne ke liye karna padta
hai...ek tu hi mili jiske saamne bhaigiri
dikhane ka mann nahin karta. Bas jaisa
hoon waise rehna ka maan karta hai....

Julie looks at him.

JULIE
Main itni achchi nahin hoon Raghav.

Raghav looks at her. His fingers taking hair out of her eyes.

JULIE (CONT'D)
Mujhe bhi zinda rehne ke liye. Apna jaan
bachane ke liye bahut kuch karna padta hai...

RAGHAV
Jab tak tujhe theek lage kar. Jab lage
bahut hua. Tab chodd dena. Aagey main
dekh loonga...

JULIE
(smiles a sad smile)
Apna line mein resign nahin hota...

RAGHAV
(smiles too)
Chodd na...tu idhar hai.. Main idhar
hoon...koi achcha baat karte hain...

JULIE
Bhel khate hain...tikha wala...baarish mein
bahut tasty lagta hai...

RAGHAV
Aur uske baad garam-garam machchi fry.

Julie nods like an excited kid. Raghav chuckles up seeing the


look on her face. Music:

Music plays softly.

Binata is sitting on the bed, with bandage around her wrists. A


NURSE is tending to her.

Mr. David opens the door after knocking. Shows Usmaan in.

Usmaan looks at Binata. Binata looks at him with hatred.

USMAAN
Can I talk to her alone Mr. David?

Mr. David nods. Gestures the nurse to come step out.

Nurse follows Mr. David out. They shut the door.

Usmaan goes closer to Binata. Looks at her wrists. No softness


or pity in his eyes.

USMAAN (CONT'D)
(re; wrists)
Kya hai yeh? Hunh? Tumhare baap ko kaisa
lagta agar subah usse tumhari body claim
karne ke liye call jaata...

BINATA
Meri life. Main jo marzi karoon iske saath.
Isse jiyun. Khatam karo. Koi hota kaun
hau mujhe kuch kehna wala.

USMAAN
(snaps)
Oh really...madad chahiye...achche blade
ya...tez churi laake doon...

The girl starts sobbing in reaction.

BINATA
I can't take it anymore. Main kya karoon...

She looks helpless as her body shakes convulsively.

Usmaan sees her shaking and crying. He goes and sits down next
to her. Torn between wanting to console her and holding on to
his justified anger.

Binata turns her face towards him.

BINATA (CONT'D)
I...can't take it...

Usmaan mildly slaps her cheek. His hands weak. Binata shakes
some more. Some more tears roll down.

Usmaan puts his arms around, holding her tight.

USMAAN
Bewakoof bachche...shhh...yeh koi tareeka
hai kya...pareshaani se peecha chudane ka...

Usmaan keeps gently running his hand over her head.

INT. STD-PCO -- NIGHT

Empty PCO as usual. Shutter down. Ansari is holding the receiver


firmly to his hear.

ANSARI
Baat dosti ki nahin hai Musa bhai. Imandaari
ki hai. Main maanta hoon mujhe dhandha
karna nahin aata. Meri wajah se Zubeydah
bhai ka nuksaan hota hai baar-baar. Isliye
aap Zubeydah bhai ko boliye ki main peeche
hat-ta hoon. Unhe jo kaabil lage uske zariye
maal yahan lana aur yahan se le jaana shuru
kar den. Mujhe maaf karen...rakhta hoon.

Ansari lowers the phone down on to the receiver. He stands from


the stool and taps on the shutter.

The shutter goes up, lift by the shopkeeper.

CUT TO:

EXT. OUTSIDE STD-PCO -- NIGHT

Ansari comes out. Sees that Wasim is waiting for him next to
the car.

Wasim straightens as he sees his brother. Hands him the car


keys.

WASIM
Aapne bulaya mujhe?

Ansari nods. Opens the door and gestures Wasim to get into
passenger seat.

INT. CAR -- NIGHT

They shut the doors. Ansari starts the car.

ANSARI
Kaisa gaya tera din Pritam Singh ke yahan?

WASIM
Achcha gaya...apna workshop dekha...gaadiyon
mein maal chupane ka jagah banane ka system
dekha.

Ansari nods.

ANSARI
Tujhe apne saare godam malom hain na?

WASIM
Ji bhai.

ANSARI
Tu unke baare mein kisi ko bataya toh nahin?
Rajesh ko? Rati ko? Usmaan ko?

Wasim shakes his head defiantly.

WASIM
Maine Dayal sahab ko bataya tha court mein...

ANSARI
Ab mujhe bata...

WASIM
Nahin. Kisi ko kuch nahin bola maine. Jo
baat pata hai nuksaan kar sakti hai woh
kyun boloonga main. Jo nahin pata tha woh
galti se keh diya.

Ansari eases up.

ANSARI
Un godowns ka kisi ko nahin pata. Raja ko
bhi nahin. Teri bhabhi ko bhi nahin.

WASIM
Maine Rajesh ko godown se maal nikalne ke
baad phone kiya tha aur usse Bademiyan par
milne ko kaha tha...

Ansari nods.

ANSARI
Main jaanta tha. Tu aisa koi galti nahin
karega. Abhi dhyan se sunn. Godam leke
jaa raha hoon tujhe. Saare stock ka ginti
karke mujhe bolna. Kisi parche pe mat
likhna.
(taps his head)
Idhar hisaab rakhna...

Wasim nods.

ANSARI (CONT'D)
Jitna maal hai sambhaal ke bechna hai abhi.

ANSARI

WASIM (CONT'D)
Hasish. Charas. Gard. Aur mandrax ke
supplier toh ab bhi khade hain.

ANSARI
Lekin apni kamai sabse zyada Cocaine se
hoti hai. Sabse mehnga bikne wala maal...

WASIM
Purana hisaab dekhen toh apne paas 4 kilo
Cocaine mein se 8 kilo nikalta hai. Milawat
karne ke baad. Dus kilo tak nikala ja sakta
hai. Aur lene wale ko pata bhi nahin
chalega. Sahi milawat karte rahe toh apna
kaam nikal jayega...aur sasta bhi nahin
karna padega ...

Ansari looks at his brother with a slight hint of pride in his


eyes.

EXT. STREETS. BOMBAY -- NIGHT

Ansari's car takes a turn.

A CAB comes from another road and starts following Ansari's car.

CUT TO:

INT. CAB -- NIGHT

Selva is sitting next to the cab driver.

CUT TO:

EXT. OUTSIDE ANSARI'S GODOWN -- NIGHT

Ansari stops the car. Turns the headlights off. Wasim and Ansari
get off and walk to the car.

CUT TO:

EXT. OPPOSITE THE ROAD -- NIGHT

Selva is watching Ansari and Wasim as they enter the godown.

CUT TO:

INT. PUBLIC PHONE -- NIGHT

Selva puts in a coin and dials a number. The coin clicks as the
call connects.

SELVA
Jagdale sahab se baat karao...bolo Parsi bol
raha hoon...

CUT TO:

INT. ANC -- NIGHT

Jagdale is busy. A S.I. comes and tells him something.

BACK TO -

SELVA

Thinking. His finger tapping the phone. His expression changes


suddenly. He lowers the phone from his ear and is about to hang
it and when -

JAGDALE'S VOICE
Bol...

Selva puts the receiver back to his ear. Immediately.

SELVA
Selva bolta hai Jagdale sahab.

JAGDALE'S VOICE
Khabar kya hai?

SELVA
Ab...abhi koi khaas khabar hai nahin
sahab...par main laga hoon...Ansari ke
peeche...kuch na kuch khabar jaldi niklata
hoon...

JAGDALE'S VOICE
Dekh Raghav bahar aa gaya na...abhi shaane
khabar nahin aaya na toh tujhe andar daal
doonga...

SELVA
Main jaldi aapko bolta hoon...

Click and line goes dhrrrr. Selva looks at the receiver. Puts
it back.

CUT TO:

EXT. HANNAH'S HOUSE -- NIGHT

House as seen from outside. The light comes on inside as seen


through one of the windows.

Behind the window partly seen Hannah walks to the door. At the
door Usmaan is standing with Binata in his arms. Hannah opens
the door.

INT. HANNAH'S HOUSE -- NIGHT

Usmaan carries Binata inside. Hannah takes the sight of a young


sleeping girl being carried in with a slight surprise.

HANNAH
What happened to her?

Usmaan puts Binata down on a sofa and looks at Hannah.

USMAAN
Kuch nahin maa...sedatives diye hain doctor
ne...so rahi hai...

HANNAH
Aur hai kaun?

USMAAN
Addict hai...Mr. David ke paas chodd ke
aaya tha...lekin wahan...

Usmaan holds up Binata's wrist to show Hannah. Hannah winces.

HANNAH
Poor child.

Hannah sits down, near Binata.

HANNAH (CONT'D)
Iske parents kahan hain?

USMAAN
Manipur mein. Iske father kal hi nikle
hain yahan se. Isko Mr. David ke yahan
admit karne ke baad...

Hannah gently strokes Binata's forehead. Usmaan sits down on


another sofa. Stretches his tired legs.

HANNAH
Usmaan...karenge kya iska...

USMAAN
Aap apne school le jaana...

HANNAH
Aur isne wahan se bhaagne ki koshish ki
toh? Drugs lene ki koshish ki toh?

Usmaan shakes his head.

USMAAN
I don't know maa...Mujhse nahin choda gaya
isse wahan...akele...

Hannah gets up from that sofa and goes to Usmaan.

HANNAH
Usmaan...you love kids...shaadi kar leta
toh tere apne hote...

USMAAN
Mere jo bachche hain main unse already
pareshaan hoon maa...

HANNAH
Hamesha bahana banata hai...

USMAAN
(yawns)
Thak gaya hoon maa....

Hannah sits near him. Runs her fingers on his forehead. Usmaan
closes his eyes. Dozes off in few seconds.

Hannah look at him. Gets up from the sofa.

CUT TO:

INT. HANNAH'S HOUSE -- MOMENTS LATER

Hannah comes out of her. She's carrying TWO BLANKETS. She


spreads one over Binata.

Then moves to the other sofa. Usmaan has lied down on sofa.
His shirt still tucked in his pants. His shoes still in his
feet.

Hannah spreads the sheets over, covers Usmaan properly. Then


bends down and kisses his forehead. Usmaan starts snoring gently.

Hannah smiles and goes back to her room.

CUT TO:

EXT. MANALI. VILLAGE IN HILLS -- NIGHT

Narrow dark lanes of an isolated village. Man 1 leads Brinda


and Mahendra to a hut, showing them the way with his torch.

They stops at the door while Man 1 opens the lock. Once done he
opens the door and hands the torch to Mahendra.

MAN 1
Jitni neend poori kar sakte ho kar
lena...subah jaldi nikalna hai...

Mahendra nods.

MAN 1 (CONT'D)
Bijli yahan aksar jaati rehti hai...andar
lamp hai...lighter ya maachis ho toh jala
lena...torch ki battery mat bekaar kharch
karna...

MAHENDRA
Sone se pehle kulla bhi kar
lenge...machchardaani bhi khol lenge...aur
koi aadesh hai toh woh bhi bol do....

Man 1 shakes his head and walks away.

MAHENDRA (CONT'D)
(mutters)
Haan nahin toh...

And enters the door. Brinda follows.

CUT TO:

INT. HUT -- NIGHT

Brinda comes in and closes the door. Mahendra is moving the


torch around.

Against one of the walls cartons are stacked to the roof. On


another wall hangs the gas-lamp. Windows are shut.

Mahendra points the torch at Brinda. Smiles mischievously.

MAHENDRA
Dilli mein toh dopahar thi. Yahan toh raat
kaatni padegi ek kamre mein.

Brinda strikes a match. And takes the match to the lamp. She
lights it. Mahendra turns the torch off.

In the light Brinda looks around. Goes to the cartons. She


taps them. They're empty.

Brinda moves a few cartons from the wall and starts placing them
in the center of the room.

MAHENDRA (CONT'D)
Kay kar rahi ho?

BRINDA
Apna kamra alag kar rahi hoon...

MAHENDRA
(grins)
Hamesha...batwaara karne mein lagi rehti
ho...Jinnah ke khandaan se ho kya...?

Brinda pays no attention to him. Stacks six-seven cartons on


top of each other making a temporary wall.

She goes behind the wall with her bag.

BRINDA (O.S.)
Is taraf mat aana. Kapde badal rahi hoon...

Mahendra stares at the wall. At the cartons behind which Brinda


is.

MAHENDRA
Ek baat batao...tumhe ajeeb nahin lagta...

BRINDA (O.S.)
Kya?

MAHENDRA
Tumhara iss police ki naukri mein
hona...matlab...tum jo itne achche mahaul
mein pali-badhi...aisee kabhi rahi nahin...

BRINDA (O.S.)
Tum kya bachpan se jaante ho mujhe? Jo
tumhe pata hoga ki main kaise mahaul mein
rahi?

MAHENDRA
Andaza lagaya bas...

BRINDA (O.S.)
Mat lagaya karo andaze mere baare mein.

Mahendra nods to himself.

BRINDA (O.S.) (CONT'D)


Ek baat poochoon?

MAHENDRA
Kya?

BRINDA (O.S.)
Subah talashi ke wakt - tum nahin chahte
the woh log mujhe chuyen...haath lagayen...ya
sirf iss baat ki fikr thi ki kahin unhe
guns ka pata na chal jaye...

Mahendra smiles to himself.

MAHENDRA
Sach boloon toh guns ki fikar zyada thi...

Brinda steps out from behind the carton-wall. Her clothes changed -
but nothing like a night wear.

She holds out TWO GUNS for him. The FASTENING TAPE is still
sticking to the guns.

BRINDA
Toh inhe ab apne paas rakho. Subah se
shareer se chipkaye hue tang aa gayi hoon
main.

Mahendra takes one of the guns from her hand and starts to take
the fastening tape off it. Brinda shakes her head and also starts
removing the fastening tape.

Done with it she looks at him.

BRINDA (CONT'D)
Agar subah jaldi uthna hai toh abhi so len.

Mahendra tucks his gun in his waist instead of putting it away.


And shakes his head.

MAHENDRA
Agar subah hone ka intezaar kiya toh Raja
pata nahin kahan-ka-kahan nikal jayega.
Woh yahan chutti manane nahin aaya. Kaam
hote hi satak lega. Isliye usse aaj raat
hi dhoondhna padega.

BRINDA
Aur dhoondhege kahan?

Mahendra looks at her.

MAHENDRA
Is aadmi ne mujhe bola tha 'jiske paas le
ja raha hoon woh 35 saal se yeh kaam kar
raha hai.' Charas ka kaam.

BRINDA
(sarcastic)
Sirf yehi bola tha ya address bhi bata diya
usne tumhe.

Mahendra goes to the cartons that he was staring at. He picks


up one of them and holds it against the lamp.

The lettering on it becomes clear. BHIM SINGH FRUIT PRODUCTS.

Brinda looks at the name. Mahendra puts his finger below the
line that says 'Bhim Singh Fruit Products.'

As Brinda steps closer, she reads it. 35 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE.

Her eyes open wide.

MAHENDRA
Yeh jhopda bhara pada in dabbon se. Matlab
is gaanv ke jhopde yeh godowns ki tarah
istemaal karta hai. Ya toh apne fruits ke
maal ke liye. Ya phir charas ke liye. Aur
is choti is jagah mein - factory godown se
zyada door nahin hogi.

Brinda nods. Checks her gun for the bullets. Seems satisfied
she locks it again. Then nods at Mahendra.

Mahendra nods back. Turns the knob of lamp. It goes off.
