Press Release
“FIGHT BACK USA” A NATIONAL WEBCAST TEACH-IN ON FIGHTING AUSTERITY, DEBT and CORPORATE GREED TO
STREAM LIVE ON TUESDAY, APRIL 5, 2011
'60s Style Teach-In Meets the Digital Age in Live Stream Webcast
Frances Fox Piven (professor, CUNY Graduate Center) and Cornel West (professor, Princeton University) will host
a national webcast teach-in addressing the roots of the current economic crisis and what people are doing to fight
back this Tuesday, April 5, 2011. The event will stream live from New York City’s historic Judson Memorial Church,
55 Washington Square South , New York, NY 10012-1018 (www.judson.org).
More than 180 campuses nationally are hosting viewings of the webcast from 2-3:30 p.m. (EDT); local campus “Do
It Yourself Action Strategy Sessions” will follow from 3:30-5 p.m. (EDT) in each location.
Professors West and Piven will be joined by the Honorable Gustavo Rivera, New York State Senator and adjunct
professor of political science (Pace University) who will moderate the teach-in. Also joining the live-stream teach-
in are economist Jeffrey Sachs (Columbia University); public policy analyst Heather McGhee (Demos) and
President Richard Trumka (AFL-CIO).
In addition, the teach-in will feature activists from around the country: Beth Huang, student leader from
Wisconsin (United Students Against Sweatshops), Anthony Klug, public education activist (UFT, Wadleigh High
Chapter) and Sergio Cuevas, housing activist (National People’s Action).
A Press Briefing (with Q&A) with Piven, West and other panelists will take place following the webcast, on site at
Judson Memorial Church starting at 4 p.m.
The live stream event is designed to help campus and community viewers examine the connections between
corporate/bank greed and tax-avoidance, personal and public debt, so-called “austerity” and the ongoing attacks
on public employee unions, public education and social services to the most needy Americans.
Most importantly, the teach-in seeks to help young people across America understand how the recent actions
undertaken by the brave citizens of Wisconsin are the key to turning the tide away from increasing inequality and
misery, and toward the development of a sustainable and healthy American society in the 21st century. The teach-
in seeks to infuse the fight back in the states with the energy and commitment of American youth whose future
hangs in the balance.

Campus Snapshots
Description of Teach-in: Students, faculty, and community members will gather in the University Center KIVA room on
the campus of the University of Michigan-Flint. Dr. Jason Kosnoski, professor of Political Science, will join with local labor
leaders from the UAW and AFL-CIO to speak about the current threats to Michigan's working citizens, and facilitate a
conversation about what students can do to take action.
Quote: “In Flint, Michigan -- where one of labor's most iconic victories occurred seventy-five years ago with the Flint sit-
down strike-- students and community members will gather to collaboratively discuss the actions we can all take to fight
back against austerity, debt, and corporate greed. Current legislative initiatives in Michigan have put the right's of
Michigan's workers in jeopardy. In the city where the middle class was created, students will learn how to work together
to save it.”

Description : Our teach-in is sponsored by 14 academic programs, 6 campus unions, and a variety of student groups.
We will provide participants a free lunch (for the first 350 participants) and an exciting program of talks by leading
scholars and area activists. Each of the speakers is providing a one-page statement with key ideas and information,
and those statements will be available in a teach-in booklet.
Actions/Campaign Connection: Rallies on April 4 in Springfield and Greenfield, and, growing directly out of the teach-
in, a next-day four hour event for students to call in to their legislators to advocate for increased funding for higher
education, increases in financial aid, and the need to adopt a progressive revenue proposal.
Quote: “Not only students, but all of us, have trouble understanding what is happening. Politicians and the media
present only a narrow range of alternatives. There ARE viable alternatives to things-as-they-are, and this teach-in will
present those alternatives, backed by evidence and scholarship. Such information is ONE necessary basis for action to
build a better world.” Dan Clawson, Professor of Sociology, University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Email: clawson.dan@gmail.com
Description of Teach –in: Panel discussion at the Bancroft Hotel , moderated by Labor Education Center

Quote: “Like in Wisconsin and Ohio, the time has come in NJ for students and youth, teachers, firefighter and all
public employees unions to unite and take back the statehouse. We are inspired by the brave citizens of Wisconsin
and we are also learning from that fight. We must all demand federal and state budgets and tax-policies that reflect
the needs and interests of the majority of citizens. We must fight against all assaults on the public good.”
